Default Are Scooby owner getting ripped off by insurance companies?

A standard WRX is Group 19

Hot hatches like Civics, Cupras and Golf are just a fast, yet have a much lower insurance group.

Anyone know why?

average claim cost?!

Jap car parts cost more, so if you bend one its a cost the insurance has to cover!

Typical drivers and driving style, you dont buy a scooby for fuel economy do you

Probably because scoobs have an image problem. I don't mean in a badway. They are stereotyped as a thief's 'favourite' and also known to be useful for ram raiding. Insurers see them as very 'desirable' as well, which ramps up their nickability, hence higher insurance group and premiums.

Lots of insurers don't use the old 1-20 groupings for cars, they look at claim stats for each car on their own.

Insurers calculate premiums by a combination of the following (note, they use facts, not 'image', their 'opinion' etc. obviously, you can question the validity of their facts)

Risk of theft
Driver profile (likelyhood of crashing etc.)
Location of car
Use of car
Cost and ease of repairing car

Wouldn't pay any attention to insurance group. Just get quotes instead.

Put it this way, my group 19 car (bmw 740) is £400pa whereas, no doubt, a gp 19 scoob would be at least double this.

I didn't really pay more for Scooby Insurance when I swapped over to it recently from a Civic Type R .... I live in London and the car isn't garaged. That said I am 40 with full NCB.

Last years CTR insurance was £650. I am just changing the Scooby to Keith Michaels at £675 with the car PPP'd as well.

I know 18 months ago I was quoted £1100 for a PPP'd classic WRX wagon - the insurers (and yes, I tried quite a few!) said I was a good risk but the car wasn't.

On that basis maybe things have actually got better of late - I am 40 not 38 (thats not better though!!!) but other than that my circumstances are the same .... married, same location, etc. A reduction from £1100 to £675 is far more reasonable. If the rates were still the same as they were 18 months ago I wouldn't have bought an Impreza!

One of the reasons I sold mine. Never had claims or accidents in the 4 I had and it just seemed I was paying for everyone else's misfortune.

Its about time th uk adopted the US policy of insuring the driver based on indfividual risk and not the car
