If you have done this, did you use 1" or 2" and how much do you need to wrap the exhaust manifold and up pipe ?

Down pipe already wrapped, is there any point of wrapping further back than the cat ?

System is standard but flowed manifold and up pipe, open neck sports cat and straight though centre section - Miltek.

I understand there's special paint that you use afterwards too.

Any advice on metal tie wraps - I understand you always need more ?

Hi temp spray on paint is lots easier to use with them off the motor ...

Do you wrap the parts individually or can you assemble the manifold components and wrap them together ?

Good question .. I'm about to do mine ... I'm intending to assemble with shiny new gaskets and wrap with as few 'breaks' as possible to cut down on the amount of straps/clips. Get some latex gloves as the fibres are unpleasant, and damp (not soak!) the wrap down to get a tighter finish.

Seems like a good plan. I've never had the manifold off and wasn't sure if you could assemble off the car or not.

I'll get some of the metal straps, but also thinking stainless wire might be a handy option to have as well.

Asbestos gauntlets for me - I hate fibre glass etc...

 

I'd go 2" TBH - this was on Megan headers though.

Indeed. My real world advice is get someone else to do it, and let them worry about inches

All I will say is with 2" you don't have to wrap it around (and around and around and around) as often

 

you could get the headers coated with ceramic coating which will according to people who do it reduce under bonnet temps by upto 30 %, not dure who could do it in uk but Calico coatings in us do it

 

Maybe ceramic coating on the next go, but I've had the exhaust a few weeks now and I just want to get the job done, I know I can get wrapping & paint.

So if anyone could confirm, this is what I'm expecting to do.

Assemble manifold (already coated in hi temp paint) off the car with new gaskets and wrap the whole manifold.

Wrap up pipe seperately.

Paint wrapped parts with more high temp paint. Although I think onder2: I have heard of silicone paint - to protect exhaust wrapping ?

Any clues on this stuff ?

 

Don't need the hi temp paint UNDER the wrap AFAIK, someone correct me if I'm wrong. 1" will give you a tighter more even wrap, 2" is quicker, but harder to use on tight curves. There is a special hi temp paint that you can get specifically for overpainting wrap. It basically waterproofs it so water can't get under the wrap, but it doesn't cure until you've taken the car for a run and got it really up to temperature. Definitely get the wrapping done off the car. Don't even think of wrapping or painting with the headers or uppipe in situ. Downpipe wrapping will help. Not necessary beyond downpipe at all and in fact you could stop it after the cat.
