I have not got it yet but reading through the forum it seems it is a matter of time.

Is it a weak block or something to do with the piston conrod set up in the 97/98 cars

Piston slap is due to a undersize piston, due to a design flaw with the new (at the time) piston skirt used on 97 & 98 cars and in my opinon only effect cars fitted with a bottom limit piston as not all cars suffer from it. this normaly only effects the No 4 cyinder and is a easy fix. Subaru even make a replacement part. Damage wise when i stripped mine down the damage was light even though the car had 35000miles. The damage was mainly on the skirt thrust side with light polising,and marginal contact on the bore which i honed.

If yours has not got it by now i should think you are okay

Whilst they can be a little noisy, and irritating, slappy engines are rarely unreliable, or cause problems........ apart from trying to explain to frieds why your Scoob sounds like a diesel !

My daily work horse '97 import Forrester (240bhp version) sounds like a bag of nails when cold, and a diesel when warm, and has done for the last 30,000 + miles.

It's done nigh on 90,000 miles, and gets roughly 240 miles to 3/4 tank marker, and it's hard to justify any excuse I come up with, to fit something a little "quieter"

If it were just an engine, I'd drop something in straight away, but, engine, then turbo, then gearbox, and clutch, and ECU, and.............................
