Afternoon all.

As my MY00 UK Classic slowly approaches its 45K service, I'll be booking it into Subaru so that I don't void the warranty it still has. On the agenda is a cam-belt change.

Is this going to hurt..? I appreciate that engines are expensive so the relative cost isn't an issue... just curious as to whether I'll need to take along my own lube!

Looking around the £300 mark.

 

the whole cambelt service is going to be £450 or more from a main dealer.

You will not void your warranty by taking it to a specialist if they use Genuine subaru parts, which you can stipulate no trouble at all.

been quoted £360 plus vat for a 36k service and cambelt change on my my00 import at API,sounded reasonable....... is the change point 45k or does it depend on years also?.....ive no records of it being carried out previously

 

I helped the local mechanic do my old scooby!

paid £60 for belt.

and he did it for £50!

BARGAIN!!!

There appears to be a varied cost between dealers so I'll just have to ask SGT in Taplow what they'll charge. If I'm lucky, they might be kind to me given it's a major service, my wife also uses them, and I've got some other work that I'm prepared to pay them to do.

We shall see.

whats the norm for the 90k service,

mine needs that doing according to the monthly side of servicing, no where near 90k miles

len at subaru4U quoted me 511 all in, sgt at taplow quoted me over 700quid for the 90k!

 

According to the book, the service interval for the cambelt on a MY00 is 60000 anyway.

The price from API sounds reasonable, and you have the added satsifaction of knowing its being done by one of the UK top Impreza engine specialists.

Not sure about a 60,000 interval though, I've always done them on 36k, although that is a few thousand short of the recommended interval.

 

i think ive read somewhere that the belt change interval went from 45k pre00 to 60k my00 onwards,but normally belt life has a time span as well as miles covered,so depending on the service intervals its which ever comes first.......think ill get mine done at 36k just to be safe,rebuild cost compared to the price of a belt change is no contest

 

Agree totally, in the same way that oil and filters are cheap... engines are expensive. Personally I've always shaved about 10K miles off a manufacturer's recommended interval because c60K or c70K miles doesn't feel right to me. My belt's now 5 years old so needs doing anyway really. Incidentally, the service book for my MY00 UK Classic states 48 months or 45K miles for the change... think my wife's UK MY01 WRX says 60...

Within reason I personally only believe in changing consumables like oil and filters when the appropriate mileage has been done, which for my MY00 UK Classic is 7.5K miles (so say Subaru.) Once my warranty has expired I'll be changing the oil myself and at every 6K miles... then probably every 3K when it hits 60K on the clock. Don't want to take this thread too far OT but here's a picture of what 3K mile old oil looks like;

Granted it's doing its job of trapping dirt but I wouldn't want to use it for 6, 7.5, or even 10K miles!

As for the more critical components like cam-belts, because they're made from rubber and exposed to the extremeties of the UK weather, they perish... so irrespective of miles I would always change these inside of 5 years. According to Subaru, for my Classic it's 48 months (4 years) so I've missed that... but 5 is acceptable given the belt probably would last 8+ years and 60-70K miles.

Although your belt hasn't done the miles, if its yearly clock is ticking then I'd get it done.

For a 60K service including cambelt I've been quaoted £600 from a Subaru main dealer but £320 from a Subaru specialist on the Wirral. So it does pay to shop around.

Not sure my 94 WRX would be a similar job to do but I had a garage who specialize in scoobys at Bristol and they did it for me including the belt for £150.00
