Chris,

It depends on what you have planned for the future? Are you planning 350bhp / 400bhp or what?

TMIC's are a good buy if your aiming for around 350-375bhp as the one in the link is an upgraded item. A lot of people on here will advise you for that money you should consider a FMIC, however, these require more technical fitting and can produce more lag, ie waiting another 200-400rpm for the turbo to spool up.

FMIC's do work better, ie they keep the charge temp lower, however it's up to you and how much power you are looking for!!!!

A good FMIC will outperform any after market top mount and the prices may be similar so why not consider a FMIC.

I'm after 350bhp/350lb/ft. I want minimal lag and a car that has 'accessable power', none of this 'full boost at 4000rpm'. I'm planning an apexi ecu, decat pipe, an upgraded fuel pump + reg.
Just wondered whether it would be worth upgrading the top mount?

There are quite a few intercooler threads on the go at present. Have a look.
Lag with a well designed FMIC is grossly overstated.
Where you get boost will depend on the turbo characteristics.
Reducing charge temperatures has to be a good thing regardless of how it is done.
I take the view that if you are going to do it, do it properly and that means a well designed FMIC and this also represents more bangs per buck in comparison to a TMIC IMHO.
Do you know your current throttlebody temperatures?
That would be a starting point. Nomad Racing do a digital guage with thin wire probe that goes into the air stream under the rubber pipe connecting to the T.B. Costs about £50.
That might be a sensible starting point.

Harvey,

have you any more details on the Nomad intake temp gauge..?

I've looked through the site and can't see it.

Cheers,
Jason

Or for around A$100 buy a JayCar meter with 2 probes - you can then measure both pre and post IC temps.

I'd ask about the weight of the TMIC in the link you provided. Looks similar to the phase 2 APS TMIC - heavy beast, great for sprints (assuming cold at start) but suffers badly from heat soak. With an 05/06 and an 6MT (less airflow through i/c as a result) I got better TB temps using the stock TMIC....

Richard

Edited to add: my APS is available of anyone wants it - make me an offer

Chris,

STi8 TMICs have been well proven at your power goals and at around half the price of the one in the link.

For 350hp/350lbft, would my standard sti top mount be ok?

What about with aquamist? I take it that an sti 8 intercooler isn't an easy swap?

From personal experience, it is very rare to start a hill climb or sprint with the TMIC 'cold'. You stay in the que to run far too long with the engine running or off and soaking the TMIC with heat.
The aftermarket TMIC are very heavy (I had an APS once..) so when they get heat soaked to 'hot' they have a huge thermal mass that resisits rapid cool-down. This is partly why a stock TMIC works well; it is light (because it has to be cheap) so quenches very quickly compared to aftermarket.

As to lag and FMIC.

Never driven an Impreza with one, but in competition the engine is alway on the boil (unless you arn't trying hard enough or get into the wrong gear; I'm good at both!) so lagg is a distant problem.

I feel a 6 speeder needs fitting with a FMIC with a good water spray.
When the car's rad is hot and the FMIC is right next to it without fans running, what about THAT heat sink issue!?

Harvey, please pm details of the Hybrid if you will.

Graham.

Chris: No V8 conversion is 'easy', and about the same messing-about level as a poorly designed FMIC from what I've seen on this site. I've done the V8 job on a V3 Sti.

A STi8 i/c will be less work to fit than a FMIC.

There are various posts in 'Projects' about fitting done by Graham, Floyd and myself.

Graham,

I manage to run with the i/c cold on drag runs. Its the heat from the turbo that takes a while to cool but if you are starting with a cool turbo and are just getting the oil temps up before a run it should be okay.

i run a fmic but had a sti tmic before only lag difference was about 100rpm have now bigger turbo too but you will get more gain the more you mod with afmic as long as it is well fitted and good design (not the ones with inlet above the turbo)

Phase II seems quite straight-forward.

FMIC means removing bumper, possible cutting of bumper and inner wing.

Seems like alot more work imo.

Wink

Hers a link to the temp gauge -

http://www.nomadracing.com/catalog/p...products_id=44

FAO 911 - I've read old threads about modding a V4/5 TMIC to fit a MY96 STI. I'd like to know a little more about the V8 conversion. I've looked for old threads, but I can't find any specific to that! Was it a V8 STI or WRX TMIC you fitted and did it come with the metal or plastice Y piece?

Thanks very much!

NickWRX:

I fitted the Sti v8 with cast Y piece.
The thread of mine and several others as Bob'% said are in Porjects.
Search for '911' and you will find it. Thankfully for you the V8 conversion is at the start of the monster thread!

Bob'5: Take your point, just that getting welding done and finding bits of alluminium sheet and tube was a pain at the time as well as the right 90 deg elbow for the Y-to-turbo. It was between Xmas and the New Year mind!

Graham:

I fitted mine with:

STi 8 i/c and pipework
Samco from old i/c (to hybridise with OE STi8 pipework)
Hacksaw (for clutch cyl)
Sticky foam (to replace undertray)

Thats the lot. I still havent got around to sorting any brackets.

Phase I sounds more tricky but still nowhere near as much hassle as fitting a FMIC.
