Try and get one that has had the 'big brake' upgrade. The standard ones are terrible. Have a look on www.p1woc.co.uk for more info.

P1's seem to get targeted heavily and I am always reading about them being stolen. I am assuming it is because the std security on them is pretty weak.

At least newage have had deadlocking for the last couple of years etc.

Has anyone mentioned the fueling issue yet? It seems quite a few of them tend to let go on the other side of 50k. The suspicion banded about on here is that Subaru really didnt map the cars properly for UK fuel (the P1 basically has a JDM STi 5 engine). Instead they put additives of some kind in the fuel tank, which seem to expire as the miles pile on. I don't know if this has ever been confirmed or not. Maybe the techies would care to coment.

Personally, I think I'd want one that'd been remapped for UK fuel or at least had a knocklink to keep an eye on things.

just before i bought my scoob, i was on the lookout for an RB5 or a P1, as at the time i liked the classic models better, and TBH I could not find one for sale that had not been rebuilt at about 27k.
i am always suspicious of rebuilt engines (right or wrong thats just the way i am), but could not find a decent one in 6 months of looking that hadn't been rebuilt. I know i am gonna get shot down by the p1 owners on here, but i need a reliable car and the track record of the p1s i looked at did not make me want to buy one.
Also the guy down the road from me has had one for 18 months and its been rebuilt 4 times!!!
apparently the crank is not up to the extra power of the car, and the shims are not put in properly. or something like that!

That is just not true......mine is pushing 360-380 bhp/340 lbs/ft and never miss a beats.
Its all depeads on how a car is looked after and which garage did the fitting of the performance upgrade.
If its is serviced regularly and driven properly ,one should not have any probs

i can't fault that mate, and i would have loved to own a p1.
just saying that when i was looking i couldn't find a decent one that had not been rebuilt at least once, and not at high mileage either, as i say the highest was 27k.
i'm sure you love your p1, and you're right, it does depend how they are looked after just like any scooby.

Yes it all depends "who you buy from as well ".....it took me a year to find the "right 1 "...the previouse owner actually clean the inside of the wheels and brakes every week !.... when I went to view it, the car was better than showroom condition!......put deposite down striaght away( did not even bother to haggle about price ! ).

nice one

i needed a new car, but not straight away, then when i decided to get another impreza i got a bit impatient, as you do

i looked around for 6 months, for a p1 or RB5, but had a few run ins with ******** selling them, then on a whim visited my local dealer, (holdcrofts in Newcastle under Lyme) where i found a stunning DBM prodrive bug eye.
fell in love on the spot and put down deposit there and then.

i'd like to buy a nice STi type r sometime next year tho, kind of like that 2 door coupe look. But as you said, it matters where you buy any car from, and maybe more where p1s are concerned, as they are more tuned and require more looking after than a 'normal' impreza.

If a car has been rebuilt 4 times, then either the rebuilds were not done correctly (Some Subaru dealerships have even been known to ***** it up) or the owner drives and treats it like he despises it. AFAIK There is no inherent weakness in the STi V engine responsible for the relatively high number of P1 rebuilds, it's reputed to be down the car not being properly remapped for lower grade UK fuel. This is often compounded by owners fitting decats etc... This means det sets in, which can destroy an engine.

Many folks run Sti V engines, either on 100ron or remapped for UK fuel, on much higher outputs than 276bhp, so its not that the internals are too higher stresed at that level at all!!

My old P1 has just ticked over 50k with the only thing non service wise changed being a new battery. The standard brakes are not terrible, they are adequate. I did change mine to 6 pots however. Thieving wise, I'm not sure at all that they are targeted. Thieves tend to favour 4 doors and wagons due to their praticality. All p1s came with standard secutity and a tracker.

Get one with warranty remaining. Saw one sell on ebay for less than 11k last week with new subaru engine and warranty remaining.

4 rebuilds, the bloke is either a loony driver or somebody doesn't know how to build an engine.

Actually not true, 4 door cars are more rigid than the 2 door, hence they are stronger

not being funny chap but yours @ 360 has been remapped (I hope) & done properly (again I hope) so it should be reliable

I had a P1 from new, did 44k in 2 years with full s/sport decat system & itg filter, did not have a remap & it was fine. I think that the problem people are saying is the older they get the less reliable the subaru uk fuel tank additive is?

I would now not run a P1 withou a remap imho

I do not disagree that there have been some engine issues with the P1, these seem to be mainly big end problems, but from what I see written on SN there seems to be similar problems with all STi V engines.

With all these things no-one posts threads saying my engine hasnt blown today, so when they do let go they become prominent posts, as the repair costs attached are high. I think this then gives the impression the cars are more fragile than they really are.

I have a P1 that I cover 12000 miles a year in, its now has over 67k on the clock, it is a lovely car and would recommend the model to anyone.
