Just in general tech terms that seems Bad News to me.
Suggest you get it soeted properly fast, ie remapped or generally checked by someone who knows

Sounds like the wrong gaskets for STi3 heads, AFAIK the hace a different squish volume to your old WRX heads.

Best you speak to Mark at Lateral of get Andy's help PRONTO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I can't remember the gaskets I used for my 2.5 with STI3 heads, but the subaru PN is 11044AA610

APIDavid might be able to tell what they are

I take it your using a Link ECU. Have you mapped for the 2.5 or just running the 2 litre map?

Did you check the shimming of the heads before assembly?

I have the same basic engine, ej257/ver3 sti heads and used the 1.6mm gaskets and have no problems.
If you are using a map based ecu like the link i can see a big problem with out having a remap. If it was a powerfc or the factory ecu its not as drastic as it knows how much air the engine is using with the maf.

1.6 mm gaskets for that are fine, exactly what we would have supplied. I was just checking that the pistons weren't hitting the heads. They won't on that configuration.

UNLESS by mistake you have 2.0 gaskets - unlikely from a professional like Mark. but it is possible to make a mistake.........

Best to let a professional hear it to save time.

Definately supplied the thicker gaskets, but even if the thinner gaskets had been fitted, the pistons wouldn't hit the heads.

Try, and borrow some det' cans, to identify if it's det', or mechanical noise.

Is it noisy all the time, or only under certain conditions ?

Try pulling out 5 degrees to see if it helps, if not, it's more likely to be mechanical.

One last thing to check, is the knock sensor. It's not uncommon for them to have an issue, and show more noise than exists !!!

Mark.

Det cans to confirm its not a knocklink fault, then its a stripdown otherwise.

Does depressing the clutch make any difference?

Does it sparkle when stationary?

ahh, just seen its knock count from the power fc. Still need to listen with det cans and confirm not a dodgy knock sensor.

Where do you have the sensor mounted? OEM position or elsewhere?

David, i was refering to the christmas tree effect of the knocklink, but from your posts you dont mention that you have one, you just refer to the count from the PFC.

With the car stationery, does the knock count increment in the same way, as it does when driving?

Det cans needed

The tappet, if loud enough, could well get picked up by the knock sensor which is afterall just a microphone.

Sounds more like noise than det. Monitor the knock count with the graphing option on the PFC, det would show as a sudden spike rather than a gradual rise as the revs increase.
