Tensioner?

Which version of tensioner did you use, and was it new or old?

Are you 100% sure the cam timing is correct ?

Hows the oil pressure when the oil is hot ?

As Steven suggests, check that you can't push the tensioner back by hand.

I'm no mechanical expert but you asked me to comment. I wonder about the origins of the heads and the short motor. If a new short motor (especially with good oil pressure) I think it is unlikely to be big end bearings, or piston noise. But I would take the effort to get an oil pressure reading before pulling the engine. It doesn't sound particularly like det either given it is on light load and doesn't spike.

STI 3 heads are now quite old, and it may well be a noise from them unless you know the heads are good and that nothing was disturbed whilst fitting.

I would also confirm the noise levels with det cans as well as a knocklink using a separate knock sensor.

could this be a dodgy piston? noise is top end noise well the noise you can hear? depends if that is what causing the knock display activity.

Just had a though after last night, I assume that it's impossible to put the wrong cam in the wrong place ?

i.e inlet cam, on the exhaust valves .

I think it can be done on the older version heads, although cant rightly remember.

Newer cams are different lengths, so difficult to get them wrong.

It which case the profiles would be different and make the valves close with a bit of a clunk ?
