Default MY05 STi steering 'weave'?

anyone elses MY05 STi suffer from this sort of thing?

my car seems to have a life of its own over certain roads - gets pulled by cambers, pot holes, lumps in road etc.

can be a bit un-nerving at times!

had geometry checked and set by dealer.

also get a 'rattle' through the steering wheel when wheels are turned and under load on bumpy roads. also does this one over bumps etc at low speeds, as long as the wheel is turned - wont do when straight.

any thoughts?

They All Do That Sir (TM)

It's the tyres; the standard RE070s have very stiff sidewalls and do tramline badly. Also the JDM-spec 235 tyres are worse than the Euro-spec 225 in my experience.

I've not experienced the rattle you describe though.

That's tramlining m8, common on most performance cars.

I picked my 04 STi up last week. 300 miles up the motorway didn't notice anything, but on normal roads it does have a mind of it's own. It's tramlining, the standard tyres i believe cause this. (Time for 18's / 19's )

When booting it, you do seem to have to hold the steering wheel tighter as it weaves around, but then it makes it feel like a special stage.

No rattles for me, can't help out there.

It really does depend on the road, some of the truck rutted roads around here can be entertaining (03stippp). But get onto the lanes or out of the inner truck lanes and it's fine.

04 STI - std 17 wheels and std tyres mine does it a lot on bumpy / rough B roads, gives the arms a nice work out, mostly good fun and smooths with speed, but can get a bit nasty under heavy breaking on realy rough patches of road.
I did not notice this on an 04 WRX that I tried and that had OZ 18's.

Until last Saturday I had standard MY01 WRX 17" wheels with Toyo's on the front (215/45/R17) and it tramlined badly.

There was a particular bend on the A48 near Cardiff where the car would take the bend on its own without me steering - did it every time due to uneven road surface.

Now I have Rota GRA 18's (225/40/R18) and they don't do it at all, not even on 'that' bend.

Same here on 05 STi, i must admit i thought it may be something to do with the DCCD rather than all tramlining, but i spose it could be just the tyres. But the RE070's are so good in the dry that i forgive them.

Re the rattle in the steering, i have it too. Bloody annoying it is, no idea why it happens, funny thing is the misses has a Clio 172 and that does it aswell, I've given up worrying about it and just drive.

Same here (03 Blobeye STI PPP) on standard Bridgestone Potenza 17" tyres. Find that switching Tyre preasures helps a bit. Currently running 32psi front 30 psi back.

It seems to be a pretty common thing on lots of year models - my MY97 does it, and it has prodrive suspension fitted and 17/225/40's fitted - always worse on rough roads or where you hit overbanding etc...

It is a bit of a shock when going from another car to the scoob, but once you are used to it you just seem to adapt and subconsciously make lots of small corrections to the steering as you drive.

I wondered as well if it something to do with the car being 4 wheel drive ? on a FWD car, the front wheels are pulling the whole weight of the car, which would mean there is more weight going through the wheels that are steering ( the front tyres basically doing more work, as the back ones just sit there and roll along with little load going through them ). With 4WD its evenly distributed so the wheels that are steering as well arent doing as much work in moving the car forward - any comments on this as it seems to make some sense to me ?

Tramlining.......get used to it, it's the tyres and the firmness of the suspension. You will soon forget it when the tyres are warmed up and you ar thrashing it round corners etc.

The Steering wheel, I read somwhere about a spring of the wrong tension being used and it can be changed at the dealer. Personally, Mine did it and when I took it in for a "Power Service" at 5000 miles I asked tham to look at it and they said they did a general tightening of everything around and on the steering column and it has been almost perfect ever since. Only when I am really getting on with it and a pretty bumpy corner, do I get anything now.

Have a chat with them at the next service. I also have the MY05 STI (type UK) I also went for the PPP at 1000 miles.
