Default Another fuel economy thread!

Could some of you offer advice as to what fuel economy to expect from a '96 STI V3.......ultimately I'm not hugely bothered about fuel costs, I certainly wouldn't be buying it if I was, but I would like to know what to expect as I'm about to have to travel 300 miles a week to commute to uni and I'd like to have a few figures to work with. The commuting stops in december so please no - "don't buy a scooby, buy a VAG TDI instead" comments please!

P.S. I know you're probably sick of fuel economy threads but I had a good search and couldn't find anything that would answer my question.

Cheers chaps and lasses!

Depends how you drive and under what conditions but should be in the region of 25mpg average.

I have a '96 STi3 it did 30 mpg till I found the fuel pump wasn't delivering at high rpm.
Worst has been 23mpg with a few mods. <10mpg on track

Enjoy

Ive no idea of your position - but i sure as hell couldnt have ran a scooby as a student..!!

I work full time as a mortgage advisor, but have to go back to uni for 4 hours a week to complete a module I didn't pass last year.....I couldn't afford it had I not been in a good job! So 300 miles a week just to go to 4 lectures...at least it's an excuse to drive???

I'd agree with the above from my own experience of travelling distances in my import classic sti - set aside £60-£70 a week for the commute, should cover it okay without having to be too light on the right pedal.

I know what your saying, I used to have a lancer and an mr2 Turbo so I'm used to ignoring the fuel guage but I wanted a rough idea. My dad has a uk classic which returns around 30mpg so I wanted something to compare to that figure. As it turns out it doesn't seem like there's going to be a huge amount in it really.

I'd heard that the sti's run very rich and that having them re-mapped (if this is possible?) can improve economy further? I know it sounds a tad miser-ish but it's a shame to waste fuel....especially at nearly £1 a litre!

If it's on the original ecu then you'll want to run on Optimax (Tesco's 99 octane if you can get it) + octane booster to avoid det. JDM STis are set up for 100+ octane fuel.

STi3s & 4s can't be re-mapped so it's an aftermarket ecu like an Apexi PF-C to make the most of the car's potential. Meanwhile a Knocklink would be usefull to monitor det.
