Question UK Turbo/RB5 (Classics)-how bad on fuel?

Right, i'm back in the market (possibly) for a Scooby BUT the deciding factor really does come down to fuel costs

Now, a mate had a MY99 UK Turbo and on the motorway @ 70mph he got around 300 miles to a tank (~£42) which isnt too bad i guess, but lets face it-its not great! He also got it down to (on a country lane thrash) 45 miles...out of £20 of fuel!!!

Sooo....my question is this: If driven sensibly, i.e "off" boost (??) round town, bit of motorway-you know, commuting 3 miles to work and back across town, couple of other bits and bobs and the odd motorway journey @ 80mph, what sort of fuel economy can i REASONABLY expect from the car on these journeys?? An answer along the lines of "xxx miles from a £xx tank of fuel" would be great as well as MPG rate!

As many (honest) and detailed answers as possible please-its crunch time people!

Help much appreciated

My best was 300 miles from a tank of optimax (£45 ish), worst was a very fun 145 miles Average was about 260 miles from a fill up

Car was a 98UK exhaust, filter and remap.

BTW I've just sold it on purchased a Fabia VRS due to the fuel costs. I do 20k+ miles a year.

I get 38mpg by driving sensibly ........... it can be done quite easily.

Trouble is, these days, the art of driving has been lost ......

Average for me is about 20mpg, giving about 180 miles from a tank. I don't thrash it, but it does get floored often

If you do buy a scoobie, remember not to boot it when you have less than a 1/4 of a tank of fuel if you are cornering hard. Leads to fuel surge (sudden loss of power). Can be embarrassing if you are half way through overtaking

You will learn that our pslewis is a law all unto himself. After 50k miles he is still on his original brake pads and discs You'll never get 38mpg

But not half as embarrassing as making sweeping ******** statements like that!!!

1/4 Tank ...... Fuel Surge ..... Cornering ..... loss of power (SUDDEN!!) ......

I cannot believe these people are allowed to walk the streets We should put them right back into the institutions from where they came .... 'Care in the Community' has a LOT to answer for!!

My best from my car was driving from my home in west wales to a friends on the wiltshire/oxfordshire border (Faringdon). The trip is bang on 200 miles. I drove off-boost all the way and on arrival in Faringdon the needle was on the half way mark.

I'm not suggesting it would have made it back on the same tank of fuel but it was a surprise to me. My Old 205GTI 1.6 used half a tank to do the same journey.

Best I've had out my RB5 is 394, but the last 10-miles had be worried it was about to conk out. That as a completely std one (non WR).

With a decat I'm lucky to see 330 and if it gets thrashed then you could easily see 200 from the same tank. Personally, I've never seen less than 260 from (on average) 55 litres worth but mine only gets thrashed at the weekends.

You cant really give an accurate figure on miles-per-tank - why dont people work out the MPG? Its not difficult!

Thanks for the replies guys!

I do around 15-20k a year (i guess) so I simply couldnt afford 150 miles/£45.

However, during the week commuting to work etc i'd keep it off boost and at low revs, so surely economy should be around that of any other 2.0 petrol?

Why is it the 2.0 Turbo Impreza seems to be so much less economical than, say, a 2.3 Turbo Saab?? Surely the bigger engine and heavier build of the Saab should outway the extra power needed for the Scooby's 4wd system?

Anyway, back to the point in hand...on a motorway journey @ 80mph u guys reckon 300 miles would be easily achievable running on standard Unleaded (95 RON) fuel?? And say, around town, drops to 250 miles...?

I'm not bothered about economy if i'm booting it cos i expect it to be bad-and it'll be worth it for the grins! Its just I DO worry about what it'll be like as a day to day car!!

i do about 18k a year and have just bought a my00 classic with centre decat and panel filter...apparently putting out 233bhp...though i am sceptical...anyway....i average about 28mpg doing mways, fast a roads, town work, the lot. kinda looking at about £45 every four days, maybe a bit more, needing to fill up. i drive off boost most places tbh to eek the most out of it...if you get work mileage paid to ya, dont even give it a second thought...jump in and get yerself a scooby!

I get approx 120miles for my £25 Optimax = approx 21MPG. This is mainly around town in a modded UK turbo. I do use the boost often when accelerating though. I am sure if I drove it like a Micra I'd get at least 25mpg but what's the point in that? I didn't buy it for it's excellent fuel economy.

Got an easy 34-35 mpg cruising in France last week on hypermarket 98 ron im my new age wrx. Its only a four cylinder two litre car until you start to boot it on the backroads. Reckon I could have got 400 miles out of the 60 litre tank.

97MY - The figures I have found are 28mpg at steady 80 mph, if you want 32 mpg you have to drop to 70 mph! - I did it once on a 290 mile trip - that took some restraint i can tell you

'Normal' driving, fill up tank at about 250 miles or so put in ~ 11 gallons so approx 23 mpg.
