Newage WRX gearbox strength
Is the anything that can be done to a newage 5 speed WRX gearbox to improve it's strength (apart from putting in a STi 6 speed) as i think I'm getting near the limit of the box and i want to take it up the 1/4 mile strip a few more times but would like to be able to drive it back afterwards
Cheers

ive been using the gearbox up the 1/4 with circa 400lbft several times in the last few weeks....its fine.
The clutch isnt....but the box is great, as long as you slot the gears home before burying the pedal it seems to hold up rather well!!

Either buy a 6 speed £1500 - £2000 depending on what it comes with and the 5 speed gb traded in or buy a gearbox kit to upgrade yours, gearkits range from about £2500 upwards + the dreaded VAT.
Did I mention I had a 6 speed for sale? lol (In general for sale)

oh and another example of the durability of this box has been BOB'5 car, he used his for drag a lot of times and it only gave up recently, his car is running 340lbft. He has now replaced it with a strengthened 5 speed from Zen i believe. A move i may take if mine goes as i dont want a 6 speeder.

In reality though the box only held up for a few drag days, at a little less than 340.
The box had a hard life though and lasted 60k miles (only a few of those on the TD05).
I thought I had a good 'un and that it wasnt going to break. Only thing is it wont really give any warning before letting go all of a sudden.
I have a couple of vids of drag runs if you want to check the gear-noise?

theres working a gearbox hard, and then really hard.
my OEM gearbox survived 32000 miles, 16000+ of which were mid 340 range, and 40+ drag runs. Clutch never hinted at slipping, except for one drag run, very early in the above 40 runs. Changed the clutch for a stronger clutch, and 1 week later the box just lunched itself whilst i was driving off a roundabout.
a gearbox is like a bag of Revels, you never know what will happen

Those are 'real world' examples.
My 370 x 320 ish hill climber is working great (Sti v3) but more frequently 3rd is a little difficult, 4th the same when under real pressure, and i know I AM a soft driver in the car.
Some times it is a little whinney on the road, and othertimes great.
A year ago it was superb before the TD05 20g arrived....
The AP organic is superb and with the ability to wheelspin so easy it all cushions the impact.
A 6 speeder is a deal for performance, chokes the TMIC flow though, as its so bloody big.
Have a listen to BOB'5 box on those runs with the straight-cut gearset!
I think the neat trick is to remove the good stock box and save it. Get a donar V6 box and send it to Paul @ Zen Performance for a helical (race spec) gearset on synchro's.
(if it's a road car)...oh....and a Lateral Paddle clutch.
About 4K in all I think by the time you are done and back on the road.
or
6 speed with the larger AP organic and a FMIC for about 2K.
Graham.
