My brother-in-law is looking at buying one of these.

Has anyone ever driven one or owned one ?
What do you reckon to them ?

He currently drives a 1.8 vectra and is looking at getting something with a little more umph. Nothing really fast, but something quick enough to enjoy. A friend of his as got one for sale at very good price.

The Mk4 SRI Turbo was a limited edition run to guage market interest before they released the GSI Turbo. I own a Mk4 Astra GSI turbo myself which is currently putting out 240bhp and 280lbs\ft Torque from a Remap and Exhaust System.

The bottom line is that a large proportion of people cannot see past the badge to appreciate the Astra in general which is a shame. I test drove numerous cars including a CTR, Scooby and Seat Leon before buying the Astra and in my opinion it's equally as good as the others.

Fun cars to drive and very easy to tune to a resonable standard. Plus your not likly to see 5 on your way down to the Supermarket as you would do with a CTR or Scooby.

ive got a 02 astra sri turbo in black. Had it for about 7 months now. had to replace oil sensor,wheel bearing and fix coolant leak all under warrenty. car has done 60k. Its not going to set the world alight but running costs and parts are cheap considering performance as it is pretty quick in a straight line until a corner approaches.

Just traded the wifes 03 plate mint std GSI for an STI.

As mentioned once you get past the badge the Astra GSI is a cracking hot hatch with 200bhp std, over and above the SRI tubo it has 1/2 leather recaros, switchable Traction control, and IMO a better bodykit star drop 17" alloys and brakes that will stop you on a two penny piece if required.

All in all a cracking car - if he can wait I would recommend waiting until the new astra VXR is released towards mid to end of november as GSI prices will probably take another tumble. Running costs are reasonable, tyres approx £80 - £90 each for dunlop, bridgestone if you shop around - brakes pads / discs are not cheap as they are specific to the GSI and turbo (fronts).

Good luck and hope he finds a well looked after example of either - the GSI has 15 bhp more std than the SRI turbo.

The gsi (197bhp) has 8bhp more than sri-t (189) although if vauxhall serviced it will prob have same power as they will update the ecu software which is why the gsi had the extra bhp. Although although a lot of standard engines make over 200bhp as vauxhall wanted to keep insurance groups down they didnt published the 197bhp figure. Imo sri-t has the better bodykit and definitely better rear bumper and alloys although that is only my opinon and i guess its down to personal taste. The brakes are the same on all turbo models.
