Sounds like either a piston or more likely the big end has gone
What fuel are you running your car on and do you have the likes of a knocklink fitted?

thanks for the reply i fear it could be the big end as i see its a bit of a problem with scoobs. i run it on optimax and a octane booster as its an import and no i dont have a knocklink i was told that it had one on the ecu anyway. if it is the big end gone is this a big and exspensive job?

Do a search on here : as you're aware you're not the first to encounter this problem so there are others that have gone through the same as you, ie getting it diagnosed and then, if it is major, getting it resolved.
API are a company respected by many that offer replacement engines etc : David from there posts on here.

you NEED a knocklink on imports mate! i ran mine on opti and octane booster and it was still detting, especially at high revs!! even more so with an induction kit! I never drove it over 6krpm in and hardly ever gave it any stick to be on the safe side!
