Exclamation Rad Air Lock - Urgent

Just changing the coolent in the RAD, 5L of dirty water has come out, however i only managed to get 2.2L of coolent in, and i cant seem to put anymore water in.

Seems to be an air lock some where, as the water does not seem to be going down in the header tank...

Anyone here know how i can clear the air lock?
How much coolent should go in and howmuch water?

Have run it, and the powerfc showed the temp raising to 60degrees then climbing very quickly to 105degree, this is when i switched off the car...though still there was no hot air was comming out of the heater.

I ran the car with the cap on, though not able to now take the cap off till the car cools down, as the pressure is pushing the water out.

Will try runnig it again with the cap off.

Try giving the top and bottom hoses a real good squeeze, if that don't

work i would empty the system again and re-fill very slowly.

So am i right to assume it is an air lock? If yes will this clear itself when the car is cold or do i need to do something else?

As the car got quite hot, how long shall i wait to start over?

Procedure:
Drain Water - I assume 5L is an ok amout to come out if its full?
Fill header tank - water or coolent?
Squeese the hoses to get water down and the air out.
Start the car with the cap off and fill as it goes down.

Is the above correct?

Anyone know how many Leters in total should go in?

Thats the way I done it, but with the help of a friend.
I kept the revs at 3000rpm keeping an eye on the temp & with 1 hand on the heater vents. Whilst friend topped up the level & at times closing the rad cap (or used a folded towel) If temps went to high engine would be turned off.
Eventually I got a some hot air from the vents but then it went back to cold. So I new there was still some air trapped.
We kept on trying & finally got a constant blowing of hot air from the vents.
The next morning I checked the level & topped it up.

sounds like you've got an air lock in the heater matrix.
If the water is sitting still in the engine the thermostst wont open and the
engine will get very hot very quickly.
what i suggest u do is bypass the heater matrix and run the engine to normal
opperating temps so the stat opens and the rad fans cut in , when this is
achieved reconnect the heater matrix hoses run the engine for a further
few minutes and you should feel warm air through the vents.
let the engine cool down and top up to correct level.
hope that helps

You can run the engine on idle, and that will move the water round allowing you to keep topping up the header tank, but it's better to avoid if you can help it, or you haven't got much coolant in initially. If you are having trouble, you can try filling the coolant through the coolant hose from header tank to turbo. Remove the end from the header tank and put a funnel in it. You will have to dilute any antifreeze with water to get it to flow nicely through the turbo. It takes a different route to the engine, and will fill more completely.

The other thing you can to get the engine to take water, is to remove the small 8mm hose from the top of the rad (the one that goes into the end tank, not the cross pipe to the overflow). Sqeeze the top rad hose, then put your finger over the small hose barb on the radiator (that you just took the hose off) and release the top hose, this will suck water into the engine block and eventually the rad. You should be able to repeat this refilling the header tank as you go. Eventually you will fill the rad up, and squeezing the top rad hose will push water out the small hose barb, time to put the 8mm hose back on.

gave up in the end....pushed the car out of the garage onto the road and made a quick call to RAC....

They came down 60mins later, removed the Hose's for the Heater matrix, and blew into them clearing the trapped air...he made sure all is working ok and left...

My over flow tank by the battery is dirty and needs cleaning, though there is white stuff in there, not sure what it is but the RAC guy thinks it may have something to do with the Head Gaskits leaking...as i have been loosing coolent.

Thanks for all the replies above....
