This vehicle is registered on V Car as CAT D in 2002
Can anyone explain this to me? They say it wasn't stolen, so I'm guessing light damage, but what kind of damage writes off a 1999 Impreza Turbo with 50k on the clock?

There are different categories of "write off" or "uneconomical to repair" D is one of them, but I'm not sure of the details. It often involves a twisted chassis as Subaru do not supply the main frame as a body part.

CAT B = can be used as parts but chassis needs to be disposed of
CAT C = Car completely unrepairable, insurer pays out
CAT D = damaged to the exctent of uneconomical repair, insurer pays out
CAT F = fire damaged un repairable.
Hope this helps

cat d and e are the lightist, a good way to think about it is, they have to go through a very stringent (sp) test, so its probably in better order than when it first rolled of the production line.
it wouldnt put me off buying one.

i looked into buying a cat D car a few years ago, checked the history and found it had been involved in a bad accident and the o/s front wheel, strut and everything had been smashed off the car, i decided not to bother cos selling it on would have proved a nightmare unless it was very cheap.
