Question Poll: Battery problems anyone? Rant here!!!

Here we go....

Please let me know if you have had a battery replaced on your Impreza under warranty.

Please reply .... Model Year (WRX or STI) and Qty (if more than one).

Please reply as I will be speaking to a Subaru Tech Specialist on why Impreza's fry their batteries this week and would like some idea how many of us have been effected.

I'll go first:

04MY STI - 2

03 WRX - Not fried but not longer holds it's charge for that long.
- Used to be OK for 2 weeks, but now if it hasn't been used for 4 days it dies .....

MY03 STi Type UK Blobeye model. 1 x Battery changed under Warranty after 9 months of ownership. Would loose charge after 4 days of no use. New battery installed under Subaru Warranty now okay (Fingers crossed).

Both mine and my sons 03 STi's have had battery changes under warrenty. Mine after about 6 months and Chris about 9 months. I use a battery "conditioner" on occasions, especially in winter, just to make sure, as I've had a couple of "moments" with the new (60Ahr) battery.

I have an 04 WRX wagon. Battery completely flat several times last January. Subaru (Mondial) Assistance called out twice. Gave report to say battery was unable to take a charge and to be replaced by main dealer. In interim I charged the battery and it has been O.K. since and so did not go to dealer during winter. Car in for service last Friday and they said there was nothing wrong with the battery and therefore did not change, but they did say that battery problems were common! I will be very annoyed if same thing happens next winter.

MY03STI - 2

Sold it back to dealer as I was getting p'd off.

No point in asking Subaru Specialist.

Main prob is they have designed the alternator to only charge battery when lights are on. If they are not on it does not charge up the battery!

Why have subaru done this? Cos its a performance car and they didn't want to waste any power it seems for charging up the battery.

And as its not charging properly the battery dies very quickly if u leave it for a few days.

MY05 JDM Sti ... went completely flat after approx 10 days. Told it was because of the Tracker and that if leaving for more than a week should disconnect the neg terminal before go away !!

Makes you wonder about the effectiveness of trackers doesn't it !!

Latest news from my Subaru dealer is that the problem is caused by the tracker. RAC now have a solution and are going to fit a new tracker unit to the car shortly. Remains to be seen whether it solves the problem.

03 STi just got new battery under warranty. i think it is an ecu problem rather than a problem with the actual battery. Put the old one on a charger on a regular basis and still do the same with the new battery.

Don't expect to get anything like satisfaction from Subaru though, any dealings i've had with Subaru UK rather than the local dealer have been pathetic. Once this one goes i'm having no more Subarus.

03 WRX PPP - Battery replaced in May 04, run with sidelights on since and no further issues. I believe there is an upgrade available from RAC Trackstar to cut the time delay for sleep mode from 6 to 1 hour after parking up, and to reduce the vibration detection sensitivity. I only have the standard old Tracker system, and that seems fine.

Arrived back to Gatwick at the weekend and flat battery after 2 weeks in the car park, this is on a MY03 with RAC Trackstar . Should I contact RAC or Subaru about this ?

Was away recently for 9 days in France, get back home and 'quel surprise', battery flat as a pancake (MY03 STi). Quick call to AA and back on the road in 20mins for a fun spin round the B-roads of Bristol & surrounding area. No probs since, but car went in next day for 2nd service so mentioned issue to dealer. Car is having an RAC tech come out to look at it at home and add a diode into the curcuit as they believe the tracker is not going into sleep mode correctly and draining off the battery over long periods.

...sounds familiar

(As usual, dealer have been tops and no complaints on my part re. level of service ... long may it continue!!)

not sure if this is relevant - but my wrx 01 wagon battery wouldn't hold a charge last winter - everyone in my street thought I had an electric car because it was on charge everynight just to get it started!

anyway, new battery and everything is fine again. I think the combination of the cold winters here up norf and not using the car enough did it - so entirely expected.
