Default New Fastest Impreza in the UK!

My sincere congratulations to Andy.F for running a 10.20@136.8 at Crail today. Making him not only the fastest Impreza in the UK, but the fastest 4 cylinder car in the uk, beating the 900hp RC EVO and the 800HP Norris EVO.

Not sure if he beat my no-nitrous time though.

Roll on TOTB.

Paul

Well done Andy F - fantastic time - thought I might have been able to challenge that time at Thorney Island today - but the ambient temp was very hot and so only managed 13.44

erm, now your talking about 60 foot times?

If by 0-60 you mean 60 foot times, then Andy was in the 1.6X region.

Was that with some real weight stripping (ie lightweight panels etc)?

If not I would have thought 9s wouldnt be too far off.

Does Andy's car have any metal panels left? Surely he's got a polycarbonate shell by now

Thumbs up

Thanks all

The short story -

Drove the car the 2hr trip to Crail, initially ran a 10.48 warm up run, then 2nd run 10.20, drove 2hrs home again
------------------------------------------------------------------------

The boring longer version -

Had the engine out last week fitting a set of cams in place of the std units I have been running, also took the opportunity to upspec the GT35R turbo a bit to suit the higher rpm power band (kindly handled by Mark at Lateral )
Got it up and running on Wednesday and what a laggy ******* it is not sure if it is the new cams or the turbo yet however once over 4200/4300 it really flies
I then spent the rest of the week manufacturing an automatic pneumatic actuation gear shifter, triggered by rpm and speed switches for full throttle seamless gear shifts. This included a launch system with automatic clutch release control.

Tested it late on Friday evening and whilst setting it up, the ignition cut didn't actuate during a 2-3 shift, the cylinder however ripped the gear selector fork out of the 2nd gear rod regardless and into the neutral gate where it remained with the car still locked in 2nd gear, some gearbox surgery later that was fixed.
The cause of the non-cut turned out to be a faulty pressure switch.
I was just not brave enough (or daft enough ?) to try it again as a miss placed shift at 8k would be terminal for either the box, engine or both ......project shelfed !

Not a problem though as I thought I can still flat shift on the MSD secondary rpm limiter to avoid that dreaded turbo lag between gears.

Set off to crail early this morning, tootling along, half way there and BANG BANG BANG misfires galore then it died
No Spark, no light on MSD, power to MSD, new MSD Ignition pack diagnosed dead. Quick call to my friendly recovery service of TUK and John Banks (thanks guys) and a quick loom alteration was done to bypass the ign system.... woohoo up and running again....but..... std coil and amplifier off my old 1.8GL scoob, would it cope with 1.8 bar+ and N2O ?
Short answer... almost !

Suddenly I realise I have lost my flat shifter due to no MSD, also no staging limiter to build boost. OK back to basics, just drive it..

Run1 - warm up at at 1.5 bar, no nos.
10.48 @ 133.5 mph ....looking VERY promising and revving clean to 8k despite the lag between granny shifts !

Run2 - It's gone midday, It's a scorcher and the queue is getting longer, induction temp is up to 67C and rising. Turn the boost up to 1.8 OR run the Gas ? fek it, it's only going to get hotter later. On with the chilling gas at 1.5 bar boost, and while we're at it, let some air out the tyres as they were squeeling like hell on the 1st launch.

10.20 @ 136.8mph good, in fact great, but... bad misfire at anything over 6500rpm.

Run 3 OFF with the gas and up with the boost to 1.8bar
10.38 @ 138mph pulling better but a miss at 6.5k which it pulled through and cleared in 4th ??

Run 4 10.7@121 terminal misfire anything over 6k

Runs 5, 6 and 7 at lower boost/higher fuel settings aborted mid track due to bad misfire.

Suspect the ignition was overheating as we actually got the car to run continually down on to 2-3 cylinders even at idle, this was later on when testing out on the road, when it cooled down again it would accept full boost no problem.

Also had a fueling issue when the fuel in my small ally tank got really hot, had to add 10% IDC to maintain the target AFR ! Removed it again on the way home from johns BBQ once it had cooled down.

Hmm, still some work to do but it shows promise !
Really looking forward to a 1.8 bar run with N2O, tried it when out testing with Tuk and I think he liked it

cheers

Andy

ps, it is still a full weight steel shell with all OE panels boot, bonnet, doors, glass, dash, heater, elec windows, some carpets and er, not a lot else

Gratulations.

Does this car run daily? Or is it a pure track car?

Weekend/evening blast type toy is probably the best way to describe it road legal but just not practical for everyday use.
