Hi i have a major engine quiery. I started my 99 v uk turbo 2000 tuesday morning and the engine had a bad metallic knocking noise from the bottom end. Subaru assistance came and took it to my local dealer who have listened to the engine but not stripped it. They rung me and said it sounds pretty terminal but think it could be caused by a "mass senser"? fault due to a K&N induction kit. Could this be true if so what damage may it of caused is this common? I have a approved warranty on the car and the dealer said that they may not pay out because of the filter yet this was already on the car when i brought it from a main dealer. Does this also sound true has anyone else had warranty experience!! PLEASE PLEASE HELP!
And finally who is best for rebuilds and what prices should i expect to pay if the worst happens

 

Do a search for Mass Air Flow sensor (MAF sensor) and filters. The MAF is a hot wire sensor which is located just after the air filter. The turbo sucks hard enough to dislodge some of the oil on the induction kit filter, which then coats the MAF and causes it to either fail or under-read. The result is the ECU will inject less fuel in the mixture for the actual amount of air, and your engine will run lean which will lead to melted pistons.

RE: re-build... just had mine done from Rally Colin and the guy's down at TVM.

possibly one of the best in the business and done a sterling job at a reasonable price.

If you bought the car from a Subaru dealer with the induction kit fitted and they have not stated that this would void your warranty then I would say it is down to the dealer to fix your engine at their expense. Or if you purchased an extended warranty then at the very least you should get this back (as you should not have been sold it in the first place), which you could then put against the cost of a re-build at a specialist.

They are correct in what they say, Subaru will not fix your engine under warranty because of the Induction kit. Any modifications will void your warranty.

For re-build you could also try - API Engines (who did mine), or I think that Powerstation still have some STI8/9 short engines which would be a straight swap for yours and at £800+VAT+Fitting may work out cheaper.

 

When did you buy the car? If it was recent, then the selling dealer is probably responsible for sorting it out. If it's an induction kit as opposed to a panel filter it's bleedin' obvious that it's not standard as they WILL have noticed it.

2nd. If it's a Subaru PROVEN 2nd hand car, there's 12months warranty on it. However, the K&N kind of complicates the situation with regard to claiming on that.
