Please bare with me as I try to explain this as best as I can.

A friend of mine has just bought himself and Evo V from a dealership in Harlow. When he checked out the mileage, the salesman told him that the 50k represented kilometers, so in actual fact the car had done 30k miles (approximate figures).

Happy as a pig in .... my friend upped and parted with his hard earned cash. He has had the car about a week now, and this morning I got an email about fuel consumption - haha I thought, get a big boys car and whinge about petrol (I did the same 2 days after buying the scoob). But he decided that he would reset the trip counter and see the distance too and from work - he then made the same trip in his girlfriends corsa, and it turns out that the odometer in the Evo is reading in miles and not kilometers.

Now, does this mean that his car has in actual fact done the documented 50k miles on the odometer.

Or, could the salesman have been telling the truth, 45k on the clock is represented in kilometers and the rest has been changed to miles?

My mate has a receipt stating that the car was sold with doing 30k miles.

Where does he stand?

I have told him to get the car checked out by a specialist - who would be able to tell him the approximate mileage of the car by wear and tear etc, then to go speak with CAB, then the dealer.

Would that be the best course of action? Or should he go straight to the dealer and question him?

It's likely that the car has been converted and is now running miles instead of kilometers and that the mileometer wasn't reset. Hard to prove either way, though TBH. That's assuming he's the first UK owner, though.

 

Probably nothing wrong with this at all. A lot of the Jap cars get converted to MPH from KPH halfway through the Odometer

For piece of mind, I'd just be asking the dealer for confirmation (paperwork) of when the clocks were changed over to MPH

Hard to answer. Would need to know the SVA date, as the speedo would have had to read MPH for that. Check the V5 for the date of first registration. I'd suggest that would be more or less the date of the transfer of kms to mph.... but still doesn't answer your question as to when the change was made.

Yep as stated, what probably has happened is..

car came into country with 50,000 km's on it, a km - mph converter would have been put on the car, the odometer would have been untouched at 50,000 (as it'll be a digital odometer on the evo) but now it's 50,000km's and whatever is going on top of that numerically is miles. So when it reads 60,000 it'll be 50,000 km's and 10,000 miles. Best way is to look at it's first MOT mileage (pre registration) which'll be km's
