Ron,

Car is UK00 with standard US STi 2.5 short motor, fitted by API Engines. Head gasket 0.8mm (quite high 8.5:1-ish compression?). UK OEM heads.
Turbo is TD05-16G modified for front-entry.
Box is OEM 5-speed.
Injectors are OEM 440s.
Headers are Gruppe-S with flexi up-pipe. Full decat 2.5in exhaust.
Induction is OEM with STi panel filter.
Clutch is AP organic.
Intercooler is a big top-mount, ex-John Banks, plus hooj STi-8 scoop.
Running 1.3 bar max.
Up-rated fuel pump and FPR.

Performance-wise it is just what I wanted, at an educated guess of around 310lbs/ft and 340bhp.

You can get similar figures from a 2.0l, but the thing about the 2.5l is that everything happens that much earlier. It starts to shift at 2,500rpm, shows 1bar of boost at 2,700rpm and at 3,000rpm it really flies, eases off around 6,000rpm, prolly with a peak of around 340bhp at 6,300rpm. Smooth, lazy, but fast. Bl00dy fast

I'm very happy

Richard.

PS Mapped on straight Optimax.

Richard, we sort of got sidetracked when we were talking about this last week.

I Emailed you after, but it seems you didn't get it.

EJ257 is 2457cc's.

How'd it go with Bob on Saturday??

James, you too, mate. Hope you got it sorted.

David, thanks for that. Very pleased with the car; it was quite pokey before the remap, but now it's just something else Bob managed to give me another 0.5bar of boost as well as making the car very smooth and willing at all speeds.

Bob doesn't like the fuel pressure reg (FSE?) so I'll keep an eye on it. The KnockLink should tell me if it's losing pressure. And to be honest, he doesn't like 2.5s in general much. He likes engines to rev, which is not the 2.5s best feature, but it's exactly what I wanted - nice smooth lazy power, so easy to drive.

Anyway, Bob spent a long time with my car. I'm sure he had a passable map within 30 minutes, but we didn't stop driving for another two hours. Top man No wonder he's always booked up.

Richard.

James, so it was your car that turned up later on! Pity that I missed you

I hope it went well for you?

I can't wait to drive Richard's car and then he can try mine

Yep, it went well thanks guys.

Nothing really wrong with it before, just felt a little 'flat' lately, and that it wouldn't produce the goods on a set of rollers. Bob had a little 'play' with the map, and got it feeling alot better.

(even if I did have to wait over an hour Richard!!

Richard doesn't the 2.5 rev the same as the 2.0 it replaced? Is it a feature of 2.5s in general or something specific in your set up? sorry for the questions just being curious.

Jazz, the 2.5 will rev willingly enough, but it's got big pistons - off the top of my head, I can't think of another petrol motor that makes 2.5 litres out of four pots - so ultimately it has a lower limit.

IIRC, Bob set the limiter at 7,400 but there's no point in going that high. It's all over by 6,500 anyway, probably with peak power at 6,300-ish. Of course it can be made to go higher, but you'd need a much bigger turbo that would have more lag and spool later etc etc and I just don't want to go there.

The reason I went for the 2.5 was to get easily accessible power at normal road speeds. It's doing around 3,000rpm at motorway cruising speed and overtaking is just a squeeze of the pedal. It's doing 100 in no time at all, and pulling harder and harder Other people are using the extra capacity to push over 500bhp, but that is not proving easy and it's the standard pistons that are giving up first.

Richard.

PS James, sorry about the wait. It was cruel of Bob not to leave you his car keys for entertainment I also left my Dawes MBC at Bob's - it's the ultimate 'race' version and I think he must want to give it a try
