Wink CTR beats WRX off lights.

Yesterday I was at the lights im my std CTR at a junction onto a stretch of dual carrageway. While sitting waiting at the lights up pulls a Y reg WRX alongside. I wondered to myself now is this guy going to try it on?

I thought to myself he probably is going to try and get ahead of me since most people need to be in the inside lane and he was on the outside.

So when lights turned green I wasnt going to fire off the lights for the sake of it. But as I started moving off sure enough the WRX put the foot down so no show with out punch, and I did the same.

He already had the run on me as i hesitated to see what his intensions were. So half way thur 1st gear he was half a car ahead. And I had to wait on Vtec. As I pull 2nd I started to gain ground back and by the time I was ready for 3rd at the redline i was about 3/4 of a car length ahead and steadly pulling ahead. He had to consede and slot in behind me.

Now before you say he wasnt trying (I can hear it now!) He was certainly trying! This was standard UK WRX no mods (im assuming). The road was bone dry (different story if wet i know).

Do most of you guys agree the CTR is faster in the dry than a std UK wrx? Bear in mind I owned a MY99 UK Scoob before the CTR. On a dry cuircut the CTR is usually faster too than a Std UK model. I know if it was modded it would be faster but im talking std cars here.

I believe that many owners with these std WRXs believe them to be quicker than they actually are sometimes.

01 WRX is dog slow I'm afraid compared with the idea most have of a Scooby. I've had fun with one whilst driving a Puma as I got on the power first.

I think his only gain on you at low speed would be if he gave it 5000 RPM and dumped the clutch. Clearly he didn't do this, so neither of you were really traction limited from the sounds of it.

Cool

Yeah, well my Maxed Nova is faster!!!

In all seriousness, the gap between the performance of the two cars is small enough that being a fraction quicker on the throttle or being in the powerband at the time would decide it. On paper though, the Scooby is the faster car to about 70mph. Adding the best part of 200 kilos to the car without increasing its power/torque was not Subaru's best move. There is a notable difference between an 01 Scooby and 99/00 in acceleration.

John, you're too used to your 400bhp monster!!! A standard bugeye and a CTR are still quick cars by 'normal' standards!

I've just sold my 04 WRX PPP for a DC5.

It's a real eye opener, 0-60 the scoob is quick for sure, but after that i reckon the DC5 would toast it. Stock it's 40 bhp down (220bhp versus 260bhp) but it's over 200 kilos lighter. DC5 also has 6 speed close ratio box.

Problem with the new age cars is weight. Bit too lardy i'm afriad.

Bugeye WRX is the slowest turbo Scoob. Doesnt suprise me that some are going to run close to CTRs.

WRX Bugeyes $hit on the previously highly regarded performance reputation of scoobs

Classic Impreza's are (were) iconic. Those were the ones quick off the mark and great in the wet twisties

Comparing a CTR and todays WRX is like some young athletic bloke having a sprint with a fat middle-aged accountant. WRX is just a bloated version of it's younger self

I would always expect the CTR to be that bit quicker than Std UK Scoobys in the dry but dont think many Scooby owners expect it lol. Certainly the guy in question yesterday didnt!

Couldn't agree more!
What really gets u is they then start wittering on about the 2 grand's worth of mods they'd like 2 put on the car!
Why don't they just spend that extra money & get a better bl..dy car in the first place?

Dont confuse UK Classics and Bugeye WRXs. A uk classic would embarrass a you in the same scenerio.

For what its worth the bug-eye had to get heavier for saftey and refinement reasons. Sure Subaru should have upped the power but that's where EcuTek or a PPP comes in. I still think the bug-eye is a fast car in todays world and much less rattly / better designed inside than the classic. It irritates me how all the classic owners jump at the chance to rubbish my car.
