Changed over to AP 4 pots a few weeks back. had to remove the wheel weigts as they were catching on the Caliper bits

Had them - re balanced with weights - not in way - but I get bad steering wheel judder - adn I know that the Disc was central in the caliper - why should putting on new stuff cause so much grief

I wish I had never bothered

If you have the AP four-pots with 16" wheels you obviously cannot use 'secret' weights when getting your wheels balanced as they foul the caliper.
The only way to do it properly is to use standard weights, as no others will enable proper balancing, hence your wobble.
Nothing to do with the brakes I feel, but one of the compromises necessary for immense braking power.

Stef.

Hmmmm - nightmare

May be changing back to standard then sooner than I had wished!

The garage said the wheels were balanced - with internal weights (not on the outside)

So cant be anything to do with brake fitment then?

bad judder is while not using brakes - I will see if someone else can redo the balancing - would have thought it was a simple task?

its nothing to do with the brakes unless someone has installed the disks incorectly on the bells. Pretty unlikely.

I bet it is just down to a crap balance on the wheels, get them re-done.

er let me re-cap, are we saying that ap 4 pots will require a rebalance and weights stuck on the outside or what ?

(said he somewhat concerned as he's having some fitted shortly).

The 16 inch AP set up ends up with the caliper being a very snug fit in the standard wheel however it is still very possible to balance the wheels using hidden weights in a two plane balance set up. the outside set of weights only have to be moved towards the centre of the wheel by approx 1/3 of its width to clear and if positioned like this enable a normal wheel balance to be achieved. Having knocked off my weights when first fitting my AP's this solution worked perfectly.

Peter just be aware and remove the set of weights nearest the outer rim of the wheel when the brakes are fitted, just get them re-balanced asap. the callipers will "machine" them off in any case so no point in causing the wheel bearings unnecessary grief.

i remember saying how yours got chopped off bob. I just thought that was purely the position of your weights, not because you had fitted the four pots.

I'll bear this in mind and remember to get get them balanced straight away, though i am working towards some cheap 17" wheels at the mo which may make things better he hopes. (wont go to 6 pots as i might keep the 16"s for track).

Cool

Steve,

It could have been as simple as the wheels being bolted on in a hurry such that they weren't perfectly centred on the hub. I had a similar problem recently, I solved it by carefully fitting the wheel and tightening the bolts up by hand until it was fitted correctly, then torquing up with a socket.
