Default Why do we get Nervous at M.O.T Time ??

Well it's that time of year again, & yes nerves are thwart !! Is it because there may be expense involved ? Is it the thought of being without your baby? Or just the fact we are so sad & love them so much that it's like a visit to the dentist for ourselves !!!!
I do the maintenance myself so all should be well, but you never know ..

Comments Please

It's because there are so many muppets out there that don't understand that you cant put a 4wd drive car on a 2wd brake test rollers.

Then you have the 18 year old YTS apprentice who must "road test" your car.

Yeah, cause I'm going to let that happen to my car!

Honestly!

The MX5 goes in tomorrow ................

I have absolutely no problem except of an 18 year old taking the Impreza out for a brake test - in the end I drove .............. BUT, not before I watched them put it on the 2 wheel rollers!!! I ran in and stopped them before they did the rears!

They said that if the car doesn't spin-out of the rollers then its ok to test them that way ...... haven't had anyone mention anything about that on here, thought I would have?

Rubbish AFAIK!! You MUST NOT put a permanent 4wd car on 2wd brake rollers front or rear, it'll wind the centre diff up! It even says so in the MOT testers manual IIRC.

More muppets!

The tester just stood there and said to me, "Its ok mate, its not jumped out the rollers, so its ok"

I said he had better NOT put the rear wheels in the rollers .... he got the message after standing there facing me for what seemed like minutes but was probably a fraction of a second .... I was about to get my car outta there!!

Unbelieveable! You really shouldn't have to tell a so called 'mechanic' that the reason you don't put a 4wd car on the 2wd brake test rollers is because you could damage the centre diff. At that point I would have told him the test was over and that he would be reported to the DVLA.

So the subaru viscous center diff cannot cope with a roller brake test?
Is this fact?

I would like to think that it would ........ and had I not been on this BBS then I wouldn't have known either way - my handbook talks about recovering the Impreza ONLY with a full lift

Nothing, I don't think? about a brake test which lasts for about 30 seconds

BUT, I didn't want any damage doing so insisted upon the road test (with me driving!)

Dave as far as I know, the answer is: "it probably won't break the diff, but it doesn't do it any good!" The Subaru manual says you must not have the car towed on two wheels or you will damage the centre diff, I dont see that 2wd brake rollers would do anything to avoid this kind of damage. Since the 4wd is permanent I don't see any way around this!

Even the MOT testers manual says 4wd vehicles should be road tested IIRC.

Best,

Thanks for the info,
I can understand that towing a scoob for a long time with one axle off the road would overheat a viscous diff, but a brake roller doing say 3mph for 10 seconds?
Am I looking at this the right way, in that if the diff does not overheat (like being towed as above) then no mechanical damage will occur during a brake test.
Surely the permanent 4WD note in the testers manual refers to diff locks on off road cars where the car would leap off the rollers and could injure workers.

Just an idea.

Dipster
