Well it had to happen some time i guess. Motor went bang last night!

Although it was pretty gutting i guess it gives me a good excuse for a big build and new gearbox

Was really horrible to hear my type r running on 3 cylinders and burning oil though

 

sorry to hear it (fellow Type R - driving with fingers crossed). What were the circumstances when it happened?

 

Was driving down the duel carriageway when a felt a sudden loss of power, after checking with myself i hadent accidentally stamped on the brakes it was soon apparent that something was very wrong!

Que huge cloud of smoke and car running like a bag of poop!

Ok so maybe i was going a little bit over the speed limit. Ahem!

It had been fine all night then suddenly when i finally opened up it died

 

What kind of history did the engine have? Mileage, fuel type oil etc?

 

Full service history in Japan and in the uk. 49K Miles always ran it on 97 with octane booster.

Always really carefull, Warm up/cooldown etc.

But apart from the minor fact that the engines buggered its been great!!!

The most reliable car ive ever had and ive never had any problems with it so its a bit weird.

 

A shame for you luke, It seems that most scoob engines dont like high speed, good luck with your rebuild

That's a bummer - but enjoy it when it's rebuilt! I dread this happening to me, but it will one day, as I'm past your mileage already (48k in an MY03 STi PPP). I use the car for work, own it myself (I took the allowance instead of the company car) and plan to run it for at least 5 years. I reckon when it finally grenades, I'll get Powerstation to put in a new 2.5 litre block and see if I can't get even more miles out of that

 

What colour was the smoke?
If black, make sure its not just your boost pipe blown off.

This is quite common and has the same symptoms of a blown engine.

Its an internet myth .... they are bulletproof if not messed about with

Think you should be alright. Apparentely Subaru made some major modifications to the engine internals with the bugeye versions onwards.

It was white smoke and its only running on three.


Had a little chat with Graham at tsl last night who as usual was really really helpfull.

Think im going to stay with the 2 litre block rather than the 2.5 as i prefer a high revving motor. But whilst its there i think im going to go for an output around the 500BHP mark and use an STI 6 speed box.

Luckily its not my daily driver so i wont have to put up with the paddle clutch all the time


Has anyone ever really shot at a 'bullet proof' STI motor before to find out if its true?

My type R V4 has done 79 thousand miles, before I bought it, the previous owner never used octane booster, only optimax (been in the uk for 5 years). Original engine/clutch/turbo. He was in his late fifties and never hammered it. Lets hope it does another 79!

Luke, did you remap it after the decat or not? If not then I think that this would further confirm the inherent weakness of the stiV/ P1 map on decatting. My gut feel is that Optimax plus OB just isn't enough in that situation.
