Default got my **** kicked today

i don't remember how hard i actually tried, i do know however i changed gears at between 4-5000 revs,

got to speed at 80mph, and actually left it there,
the point is that at 4th gear (poss. 70mph) the car kicked my ****

my car 01 wrx, his/her car was a X5. was trying from a dual carriage ,starting from traffic light road,.
basically traffic lights hit green, i legged it at 1st-3rd gears, and led, then at 4th gear X5 led, by 3-4 car lengths.
and i couldn't catch up, whilst i am still at 80mph (5th gear now)
i couldn't catch up.

am i slow

Isn't peak power developed in the mid 5k revs. If so, you were changing up too soon!

X5's are suprisingly quick. I was followed down the M5 in the Spec B and couldn't shake the bugger. It was a 4.8 or anything flash.

Its official, diesels are getting faster these days.

I also have a 5 year old 16v gti which I bought new, and it could give any reps car a pasting then. Its on a par with most new reps cars now, through the gears on the motorway theres nothing in them.

Still wont buy a diesel though.
Satisfying to know that it now costs more than Optimax!

wwp8,

At 70mph, you should have still been in 3rd gear, if you were looking for optimum acceleration.

Write out 100 times...... I must not change up until 6k revs

Default Changing too early

Mmmm i have a classic Turbo with PPP, full decat and i can get to almost 80 in 3rd most of the time, think you changed down way too early.

Saying that i had a test drive in the X5 4.8 and above 70mph that thing kicks down and really shifts, reckon its easily quicker than my scooby at higher speeds!

Cheers

Once rolling its the torque that counts!

And a 4.8 is going to have bags of it

The 4.4i is quick enough and the 4.8is is a monster. Don't under estimate them at all, even if they are rather large and heavy.

The X5 you came up against was probably running an auto box, so smooth transition from gear to gear at speed. Getting the same transition in a manual car, while concentrating on speed and other road users (and a fast X5) IMHO is an art.

Next time push your 01 in 2nd and 3rd a bit harder. Get up to at least 5.5k - 6k revs before you change gear. I’m not saying you’ll beat the X5, but you should give it a run for its money up to the speed limit.

Checkout the performance stats for the 4.8is on BMW's site. Nice 0-60, nice top speed and superb max torque at only 3.6K revs!

As the DR on the Ministry of Mayhem says......... Yooooooo Liiiiiiiike?

no idea if its a diesel or what, but it was a fast bugger once it got to speed.
at least i know it was a quick car and not something that i should have easily kicked its butt.

ps mine is standard.

Don't feel too bad, there are some big ferocious beasties out there!
A while back the other half (in 05 STi) had a Range Rover clamped firmly 2 his backside & having already exceeded the speed limit by some considerable amount decided he wasn't going 2 shake it off before seriously risking his licence & eased down 2 signify 'game over'.
The thing cruised effortlessly past & just before it made the jump to hyperspace he caught sight of the extra badge on the back...
bearing the legend "Overfinch"!
Know your limits & show respect where it's due, eh???

I Raced an X5 at the airfield event near Stafford last December. It was a 4.8 petrol (might be v8's not sure) and it was only a few car lengths behind by the end of the run.

Scoobs don't like those high revs powerman. I rarely take my sti 4 over 7k. You'd be amazed at what effect a few hundred rpm less can have on your engine and oil temps.

Who cares about oil temp etc when your giving it the odd blast. My scooby 03WRX pulls all the way up to the limiter so i change gear slightly before. There might be a different technique with the STI due to the extra cog hence the extra pull at lower revs but more changes needed, but the WRX is in each gear a little longer and this makes sense to leave it each gear longer... powerman

Going from experience on track days and formula ford racing, oil temps ARE lowered by around 10 degrees if you lower your shift point by say 3 - 400rpm. Your car is under warrenty I presume? Not everyone is in the same situation. Oh, and my sti 4, is 5 speed.

Oh dear caught off boost, you'll soon learn..! It's is easy to be complacent and get caught out a bit (especially with some of the cars around today, X5 included).

BUT it's one thing being caught out a bit off boost and another being in 5th at around 80mph... you're having a laugh surely..? Learn what rpm your boost comes in and acheives full boost. Get a boost gauge.

My 05 wrx will do an indicated 130 in 4th @6800.

Jason

PS I think most of the posts we get saying 'mondeo tdi beats wrx' are along similar lines to this thread..!

Bug eye wrx gets beat shocker

What do you expect with a car that's relatively underpowered to its weight? There are numerous examples of cars that will beat a wrx these days. Go back a few years when Imprezas first came out in the UK, not much at all could keep up with them, least beat them.

IMHO I wouldn't buy a new shape wrx and expect it to be a performance car, it's simply a 'warmed' saloon these days.

How can you kick butt in a bug-eyed stock WRX?

Another victim of the Impreza street hype.

A few basic mods will help the car, but not too much though.
