Angry UK WRX Owners - Please get the PPP or similar

Followed a WRX on a 52 plate today along the Fosse Way for about 50 miles.

He had just the Sport exhaust from Prodrive.

I could very nearly KEEP UP IN MY X-TYPE 2.0D FFS!!!!!!! There is little in it to be honest - in a straight line - i was seriously disapointed in the standard WRX performance. He could pull a few car lengths away to begin with but i could stay with him once i hit the 2.0D's power band.

I really felt seriously sad for him....

PLEASE PLEASE WRX owners - get the PPP or similar... this is embarrassing

We cant be done by Diesel drivers!!!

Maybe it was GS made to look like a WRX?

Ahem:

Jaguar X Type 2.0D:

0-60 9.9sec
0-100 33.7sec
1/4 17.9sec @ 78mph

Impreza WRX

0-60 5.9sec
0-100 17.45sec
1/4 14.89sec @ 92mph

so if it takes 17.9 seconds to get to 78mph and takes 33.7 to get to 100mph

then it must take 15.8 to go from 78mph to 100mph, that seems slow to me.

I think he was not trying !

I had a traffic light race with a new x type 2.0dt vs my BMW 318i company car at the weekend and managed to keep in front.

Having had a MY03 wrx standard, I know it would have left him well behind.

LOL

Fact is that once rolling a decent-ish TDI will live with a WRX without too much hassle.

I know this from wringing my WRX by the ***** to try and lose a fabia vrs, which is a 1.9 TDI with 130bhp... I couldn't do it, and not through lack of trying.

The PPP will help, or you can just accept that the car isn't actually that fast and sell up before you spend thousands on modding. Being a cheapskate, I sold up and bought a diesel.

Incidentally, anyone know the performance specs for JDM WRX 03 (mapped for 98 ron) - it feels about the same as my MY97 classic UK Turbo (un-modded) - would this be about right?

Still waiting to see these fabulous diesels on the track.

I have both (130BHP golf), and its complete nonsense, the diesel does have a lot of torque but limited revs, at which point he WRX is gone from sight.

Most of these posts are the same, "I got rid of sccob due to ridiculous running costs"

A week later, still missing the subaru "Yeah why buy a subaru, diesel is just as fast"

Oh and then its "yeah a jabba sport should see you keeping up"

Well modifying a car is hardly like for like.

LOL - The driver counts for quite a lot, but I really don't think he was trying!
The diesels are as quick in the mid range (due to all that torque) but as soon as I'm above 4,000 rpm it's bye, bye time as the power comes rushing in .....

I overtook a Bentley Continental the other day...how embarassing for the poor driver. That MUST mean that my car is faster then, eh?

I know that 0-60 and 0-100 times are not considered to be a true representation of a cars ability but come on...........

........any car that has a 0-60 of 10secs just doesn't stand a chance against a scoob turbo.

Anyone who says different is just all torque...I mean talk!!!

I think the story about scoobs not being that quick will always come up. My brother has just bought a Civic type r and has already told me he raced a classic scoob wrx and there was nothing in it. I'm due to find out if this is true but i have a 53'STI PPP so maybe not quite the same comparison?

http://www.fastsaloons.com/comparerace.php

Both cars are available to race, and you can view comparative performance statistics.

There is no point looking....like the Matrix....thats the sound of inevitability!! on the scooby side!!

There is another possibility....the scooby had a problem with 3,4 and 5 gear..lol

...from the man who wrote 4 months ago...

"I've just got a 2.0D company car.

Nice to drive - good grunty motor...
Classy interior compared to rep-mobile...
Nice steering weight and feel

BUT

Wallows through corners
**** stereo
Seats are uncomfortable
Rattles already

LOL

Jza"

I think I'll stick with my scoob thanks. And as for "...once i hit the 2.0D's power band" - that will have lasted all of 2 seconds then!

I'm not just "bashing"... the run in with a Fabia VRS happened 2 months ago. I had an unmodded 03 WRX with a Prodrive backbox, that's all. PSI3 shift light set at 6.5k. Coming out of a 30 zone when I was behind the vrs (I'd let him past as I guess he knew the road - I certainly didn't), I maybe pulled a yard out of him on a dash to *cough*, hitting the shift light before shifting... Little point in asking for more than 6.5k out of a WRX anyhow.

Sure, the skoda was and is slower, but in real world performance there wasn't enough in it to make me happy about WRX ownership... The WRX is a competent enough car, but if you think it's the fastest thing on the road, or faster than hot hatches, you need a reality check. I'm sure you'll find plenty of Fabia VRS drivers around willing to give you a shock . When I first got into a Scoob turbo in 1999, it was way faster than any hot hatch I'd tried... Compare a WRX with hot hatches now, and the gap has gone.

Enough from me, pass the popcorn - it's fun to watch the size of some people's blinkers

Ive had my *** handed back to me in a 250bhp classic, by a clio in Impreza blue.
thats was about the time I accepted the limitations of a classic UK and started to properly mod it.
with over 300 brake its still no picnic with some hot hatches, catch the scoob off boost and it takes a while to reel em back in.
off the line there is no contest, on the m'way though, at say 80 neck and neck with a 2.5D repmobile....?

Had a test drive in an X-type 2.0d a few weeks ago.

Truly abysmal car.... Poor ride, terrible, nervous handling, noisy engine, cramped interior, cheap fittings. Oh, and less room in the back (estate) than my old MY02 WRX wagon.....

As someone said - its about how you drive - if you came out the 30 zone in 3rd with low revs, and the Fabia was in his full turbo zone, then he would stay with you, and if you then backed off at around 80 then it wouldnt give you much chance to pull away.

Its also about getting a good start - a lower powered car can do a good job of keeping up, if it gets a better start - I have to say I'm still learning on how to get a good start from my STI, without bogging it down.

Knowing the road can and will make up for massive performance/handling/ability differences. Harryboy whom posted earlier lead a few of us on a run out a few days ago, and his N/A Legacy gave us a good pace due to his intimate knowlege of the roads. Similarly, a Saxo VTR/S (?) showed a group of us a respectable performance from Grassington to Kilnsey last summer. The best example I experienced was when I was being followed by a mate in his STiPPP (a very good one ) and on a short stretch near my home I opened up a massive gap due to me being able to maximise every corner knowing angles, apexes, camber and surfaces. On roads we are both unfamiliar with, the STi shows its superiority.

I'm not saying Scoobs are unbeatable, but there's more to consider than power, grip and handling. The handling of Scoobs isn't that brilliant anyway (especially the lardy new-ages), and once rolling the power/grip benefits of 4WD are less advantagious than on take-off. Scoobs are a brilliant compromise. Seat 5, carry luggage, go fast, benefit of 4WD contradicted by poor fuel consumption, 4WD drivetrain losses and heavy weight. There are lots of good alternatives, and everyone is entitled to their weapon of choice. If I didn't have a Scoob, I'd probably get a Fabia.

Have you tried putting loads of Impreza variations together. Surprising how close it is
