Default Most challenging road

Living in the Peak District i thought i knew about tricky roads, but on Friday went over Hardknott pass in the Lake District at dusk 20 meter visibility and 30mm of flowing water on the road even the scooby was scrabbling for grip First and second gear for over half an hour and my misses's nail marks are still in the dash!!

My clutch was a bit smelly by the time i'd finished making my girlfriend feel motion sick on that road last year - awesome roads over that way

Possibly not the most challenging road (except in winter ) but certainly memorable:

It's located here, along with many hundreds of miles of other great roads:

Start at Penrith and take the road alongside Ullswater over Kirkstone Pass to Ambleside. Head from Ambleside to Langdale then over Wrynose & Hardknott (alloy killers) to Eskdale - then change your pants...

A couple of Norwich lads on their recent visit to Cumbria...

If you are heading West along Wrynose and Hardknott take a left after Beckfoot towards Ulpha. A very different road to Hardknott and Wrynose with longer sweeping bends with loads of visibility as it is fairly flat along this stretch to get a bit more speed.....out of 1st gear anyway!

So many great roads around the Lake District, I thoroughly enjoyed my week up there last summer and would recommend it to anyone!

Went up there with the wife when we were courting. Thought I would show off and let her see one of the most dangerous roads in britain.

Cloud came down, started to rain and the discs on the 1.1 fiesta overheated on the way down hardknott (having just completed wrynose). The wife to-be was crying and I was trying to tell her its normal to come down a 1 in 3 switchback in first gear using the handbrake.

Thank god the weather was so bad as it kept away any other visitors. Dont know what I would have done if we had met another car coming the other way.

I thought my heart would burst.

First time I went over Hardknott I had to pull in for an oncoming car - A Lancia Y10 being driven by an old dear who had 2 suitcases on a roofrack...

rather her than me...
