I beleive very eary STIs didn't have red top engines, but that looks more like a WRX V-Limited as others have said.

Best asking for a photo of the VIN plate to be absolutely sure.

its a 96, so not that early.

tim of here had the same year 555 sti in the same colour and that had the red top, thats what made me think in the first place.

looks to me like a WRX.

 

The plate on the boot says it's from a run of 1000 which makes it a WRX V-limited, the STi V-limited was a run of 555 cars. Also the STi had Derek Ringer's & Colin McRae's signatures on the seat backs, not the white FIA symbols.

Foglight covers were standard too, and the STi came with a carbon strut brace. (IIRC)

Still a nice car though!

 

I looked at a 96 STI2 RA V-Limited last week which didn't have a red top, so guess it must have changed late 96 or 97?

 

mines a red top, it can wear off easily though at that age.

 

It's not an STi
I hae a version 1 STi and it's not a red top,
but!
It has an STi strut brace,
An STi intercooler and STi Plaques in 3 places in the engine bay

 

Deffo a WRX V-Ltd as i have had three and i know for a fact all STi V2 have the red top engine, cos i have had a few of them also ;-)
