Question

Just being curious, but does anyone know the difference (e.g. RON value) between Texaco's "Super Plus Unleaded" and Shell's "Super Unleaded" fuels? In my area there's a 4p per litre difference in their price.

There shouldn't be any difference, as both should be rated at 97RON minimum.

Any differences are likely to be very marginal.

Personally I would save the 4p per litre.

A recent article in the Daily Telegraph Saturday Motoring section said that Shell fuels had a higher RON value than other garages.

Something like .7 or .8 of a RON higher.

Chris.

The local BP station advertises 98RON on the pump handle of the Super Unleaded - I am not sure how realsitic this is (everywhere else is 97?) - is there anyform of law that means the fuel HAS to be 98 RON or more?

If I am using 98RON and Millers Octane Plus then I have a nice WRX Sti loving 100RON!

Tried Texaco the other night... definately not as good as BP or Shell which is all I run my P+J on nowadays....

Except Seca 99+ Ron Super which I found in Belgium on Monday perhaps we should beg and plead for them to open up branches in the UK.

Last week I posted about a high idle speed!
I filled up when very low at clacket lane services with ELF super plus, by the time I had got home 50+ miles it was running real rough, and the idle speed was at 1500 rpm.
I was going to look at the cold start valve, (thanks ransj) but after two tank fulls of shell it was back down at 800 rpm and running sweet as a nut.
Could the ELF fuel have been doggy or actually half fat unleaded, but from a full fat pump, and could this have been the cause of my probs.

Garages had a few months to change their labelling to 97 RON. That time was up in about June, so if you see any which are still saying 98, grass 'em up to your local TSO.

Thumbs up

I've found that Shell is better than ESSO as it seems to provide smoother acceleration.

Thanks

Shell or BP are the only two I use. Esso makes it seem down on power and run like a bag of spanners, Elf is like putting NUL in.

Definately BP

Everytime I am forced to fill up anywhere else, acceleration becomes a little laclustre!

BP and Millers is a good mix, I think

Interesting to hear everyone's response to my question.

I rarely use SUL (just run around on boring old UL), but I did use Shell SUL a few weeks ago for a track evening (let the car run on fumes, then add a quarter tank of SUL, let it run on fumes, then a full tank of SUL... none of this reset jibberish).

Verdict - IMHO it's good stuff. On the track I'd certainly picked up some more power/speed. Recently I've been using slicks which have a 5% smaller rolling radius than standard tyres. On the exit from the hairpin (at Knockhill), then gunning it up the straight I used to have real trouble keeping pace with UK "standard" scoobys. This time - no trouble at all (in fact I was gaining on them).

BP SUL and the likes may be better, but at 4p cheaper per litre Shell has my vote.
