Default Needle in a haystack, funny noise

Right Guys, this is starting to bug me. Since i bought the car its had this annoying noise on the passenger side.
It sounds like a leaf stuck in the air vent that is rustling in the wind. its intermittent and doesn't seem to be speed or weatherw condition dependant.
Sometimes it sounds as though it is the speaker crackling, sometimes like its air passing the window. That is to say that it is always the same sound but sometimes appears to be from slightly different places!

I have tried to turn the stereo off. I have swapped speakers. I have had the vents open or closed and have held a hoover to them to try and draw the 'leaf' out. i have slightly opened the window. I have rubbed fairy liquid across the windows edge to try for a better seal.

None of these seem to work. Has anyone had anything similar and have they worked out what it was?
