just bought a P1 and am wondering weather to go for a JR pannel filter, or an induction kit of some sort? any ideas? pro's and con's?

I/K's can knacker up your MAF, and on a 99/00 (which IIRC P1's were ) they're prone to failure anyway. Tend to shake the MAF to bits unless very securely bracketed. Also, if running an I/K you need adequate cold air to be fed to the filter cone, otherwise you will actually reduce power by inducing hot air from the engine bay.

JR, Green and K&N panels are well respected. ITG have a bad rep due to over oiliness again damaging the MAF. Many on here also swear by the STi paper filter, but it is not a lifetime unit and so need replacing at every service.

 

As your car is either my99 or my2000, it will have the 'weak' Mass Air Flow sensor. It is located just after the standard air box. Induction kits increase the air flow, but, will cause more vibration to the MAF sensor and, without a decent cold air feed, will actually increase your inlet temperature. As the temperature of air rises, it holds less oxygen and so basically, you may end up with less power than with the standard air box and filter.
If your sensor starts to fail, symptons would be, a fluctuating idle, high fuel consumption, (compared to the norm!) and general poor running. If this is left and not replaced, your engine will soon need to be re-built.
Get a good panel filter instead such as the likes of K&n, green, sti, Jr etc.

Over the years I have seen most types used. The best I think are the Pipercross Viper kits. Excellent power gains (15bhp on independent rolling road).
