Default Gear Stick - too much side to side movement in gear

Can anyone tell me the cure for too much side-to-side movement [lateral slap]with my gear stick. This has now deteriorated to the point where it is making a clicking noise, changing into and out of gear, as well as causing sloppy changes.

Is something loose or worn?

Car is JDM Sti v7 [MY02]

probably the dowel pins that secure the linkage to the selector shaft. I have done 3 6 speed boxes now, and they have all had excessive play. New dowel pins cured it, not fully, but to an extent.

Only done 1 with a 6 speed prop Rob, and had no problems matching up to a Uk rear diff from a classic.
