Question Gearbox or Wheel bearing ????????

Over the last week I've noticed a noise inside my car, (you can't help but notice it as its very loud!!!!!!!!!!)

I can only describe it as a droning noise, but I can't tell where its coming from, front or back of the car, and reading other threads on other peoples wheel bearings going, it seems they are able to tell where the noise is coming from!!!!!!!!!

Therefore this has got me wondering if it could be my gearbox?
I know other people talk about gears going bang then a rattling noise, but can anyone confirm that the gearbox can produce a droning noise and tell me what is wrong with it??

I am expecting a gearbox re build due to the age and mileage and the torque I'm running, but if its just a wheel bearing, then the bill won't be as big!

Thanks for anyones input
Kevin.

If it is a wheel bearing, the noise should get worse when you corner. IE there is more load on it and it will get louder. If its not obvious to state, a RH corner will make the left wheel bearing sing and vice versa. May be harder to then tell front or rear, but if you jack the car up and hold the wheel at top and bottom and try to waggle it, then side to side this should show up any play.
Hope this helps you decide wether its the box or not. Daz.

I'd be looking more towards the wheel bearing, they can be difficult to localise as the noise seems to resonate throughout the whole chassis.

Few suggestions that may help;

Take a passenger to listen around the car may help.

Lifting the car and pulling each wheel around to see if there is any play in there (remember to release the handbrake).

Check that your diffs haven't sprung an oil leak.

I've known gearbox bearings to give up... Especially on nigh torque cars.

The noise seems to come from all over the cabin so it was hard to tell what it was, but on dismantling the box, the drop gears were found to be shredded!

Question What diff oil ??????????

Thanks DNB,
I got my MOT yesterday and the guys think it could be my rear diff, they suggested changing the diff oil. I described the symtoms and they didn't think it was a wheel bearing. It seems to come on after a motorway journey, but when punting around town it never happens, they think that due to the heat generated that the diff bearings could be getting hot........so can anyone tell me what oil I put in a 95 Jap WRX rear diff?????????

Thankyou all again..................................if this doesn't work, then I think it is the gearbox bearings.......

Hi,

Mine does the same. its the tyres. Run your hand around the tyre from front to back. Is it rough?. Apparently its called "castleing" caused by going around corners fast wheels at different speeds and so on.

Hope this helps

Question

Fastfreddy
I dont think it is castleing, as it did it again today, while I was driving in a straight line, I pushed the clutch down and coasted and the noise continued, so I know its either the gearbox, or the rear diff, I'm changing the diff oil in a couple of days, so I will update, if this has cured it.Gearbox oil has already been done in the last two years.
Cheers Anyway
Kevin.

Yes, even if you press the clutch down and drive in a straight line it will still do it.

the rear prop carried bearing might be worth a check as easy to drop the prop and spin the bearing to check.
