When i were a lad.......before the great insurance war of the 80's,all i could hope to drive was me trusty(and rusty)manta(made buy opel for all you youngsters )12 year old itwas,i ,ah loved that car.
this week i have noticed an ageist theme to threads, and what i want to know is how you guys in the late teens, early 20's run scoobies.
do you fell right paying £2 k in insurance?,
do you live in a tent?(or still with maw and paw?)can you afford a pint of beer at the end of the week,or are you all city whizz kids earning more that the £80.50 a week when i were a lad!
yours, jealous as a jealous thing
Dave

When I was 18 ( err 11 years ago) I had a Fiat Strada Abarth 130TC worth 3 grand and the insurance was £1300 !!. That was a bleedin fortune then but as I say now you work to live not live to work, and you've got to have some fun in your life ( even if its financial insanity)

Enjoy yourselves.

Cool

It's all relative. When I got my intermediate accountancy qualifications my pay doubled - to £37 per week. I went to my bank manager and borrowed enough to buy a two year-old Lotus Europa Twin Cam. The loan lasted two years longer than the car. By the end of that year (I was 22 by then) I had my Mk1 RS2000 insured fully comp. for £50.

Those were the days!

Dave - it's easy, all you have to do is find an understanding girlfriend who deals with all the boring stuff like rent/bills etc.

Xrs, was £50 a lot of dough in the 70s?
if that equated to just under two weeks wages then nothings changed much, relatively speaking!!

Dave,

Thinking about it I guess relatively speaking it wasn't too much more than what I pay now, but I was so young then! I remember that I was with MMI, who insured people in local government, and they didn't really know what they were doing whe it came to faster cars. The RS was considered hot stuff back then.

BTW after 9 cars in 1975 I kept the RS2000 for nine years, followed a few years later by the Cosworth which I had for eleven. I have promised myself not to keep a car that long again as the family were VERY upset when I sold the Cossy.

Dave U.

I am a very understanding girlfriend, but if I'm not allowed to drive DaveD's Scooby I don't see why I should pay the bills and rent (especially as we don't live anywhere near each other!)
