It will (should) have a quicker rack than a UK car. There are 2 different quick racks and I think the ratios are 15:1 and 13:1. Some STI's were fitted with the quicker of the 2 but not sure which ones.

Dave.

if they have the quick rack, won't they have the quick steernig stickr in the back window?

I know you are not guaranteed this feature on a type r but may well be on the V lim.

The only car I know for a fact to have come with a quick rack is the 22B.

No...it was an option on the Type R, standard on the Sti 5/6 RA V-limited version though.

All STI-s come with Quick Rack...

Especially Type R's...

When my JDM STI 5 Type R was converted to Left Hand Drive they did not have LHD Quick Rack, so it has a normal 15:1 now, but as new EU spec STI's came out, I will be able to convert my LHD STI 5 to a Quick Rack... That is why I know...

Cheers,

R.

Ronin

No they don't!!

The later STi's may have less turns lock to lock than a WRX or similar but that's because they have limiters on the rack, hence the larger turning circle.

Tim is correct.

Driven 3 v5 type r v-ltd's and none had the quick rack. They do have the long (read-****e) 5th gear tho.

As far as I heard, that is how quick rack actually works...

First I thought it works as it has larger teeth (meaning less), shorter rack or sg., but not. They are acutally limited in turn, meaning that you can turn 2 lock-to-lock and that is it. That is what called quick rack. But it can be that people around here wrong. Seen that a few times, but this seems reasonable explanation.

It could be great to figure our, because I then will not pay a lot of money for the so-called quick rack, if it is not the real deal... I want the original thing, but I do not know how to get hold of a LHD version...

Oh by the way, I am looking for a sticker as well... Spare?

Cheers,

R

There are companies who can make you a true LHD quick rack for an Impreza, they are by no means cheap, but they do exist. Seek out Secret Agent Man (Jerry) from Sweden, he knows something about the manufacturer IIRC.

As to the rest of us UK peeps the RHD quick rack was offered on the Sti options list in Japan, it was only fitted as standard on the 22B and V-Limited Sti RA's.

So, how do you tell if the car is fitted with a quick rack? I don't tend to drive any other inpreza, so I wouldn't know if mine was or wasn't. STI4 Type R

tim is correct here.

try turning your car lock to lock.

I wouldn't worry about the quick rack until you drive a car which is equipped with one you won't know what you are missing.

Do they have the quick steering sticker on the back window if they do have it as an option?

In theory they should, knowing what the Japanese are like for having labels on their cars

Having driven various different scoobs with and without the quick rack (and in some cases witout power steering) I only really noticed that in a car with the quick rack steering (an Sti V V-Limited RA) I could wind on a smidge of opposite lock to counter oversteer a little bit more quickly, other than that it wasn't that different in feel on the road...however on the track I would guess (I've not driven a quick rack car in serious anger) it makes a bigger difference.

Than I was informed wrong... Please accept my apologies...

Thanks for the info on Jerry, I will try to figure out how to contact with him...

Mike, can these limiters be shifted or removed?

After fitting (with some effort) a new-age 'quick-rack' to my MY97 I'm a bit unhappy about having the turning circle of a bus. It is still quicker than the original rack though.

My Legacy already had bus like turning circle, with a restricted rack i would have thought you end up with the turning circle of a warship!
