I've spotted a WRX STi VERSION-5 TYPE-R V-LTD which is keenly priced and claims to have a full service history.

Unfortunately it has 66 000 miles.

It was imported new into the country.

If it has been serviced well and run on the correct fuel, is it a good buy or a bit leggy?

Mines done 60k and its in its prime. Make sure it's had the cambelt done and pay attention to the gearbox for any funny noises.

 

66k is hardly high mileage!!

 

Mines done over 100k now and it's still quite nippy

Looked after the engines go on and on.. my UK has 156k on the clock.. lol

66k is nothing and if you can get proof it is the original engine then you know it is a good one etc..

 

Nothing wrong with a few miles if its been looked after. Worse if it has low miles and been run on the wrong fuel.

Nothing unfortunate about that! I would much rather buy a car with that mileage which has been properly warmed up and used for long trips than one with 30k which has only been used for a few miles commute every day.

 

A mate of mine sold a V5 4door recently that he owned since new and was his Co car.. had 125k on it and stil drove as good as the day he bought it...

 

If it hasn't been detting I wouldn't worry about mileage. Trouble is you won't know unless you believe the owner that says that it has had a knocklink in from the first time it rolled a wheel on UK fuel.

 

John can you remember that Green Impreza at Star some years ago, didn't it have 160k on it yet still ran around 300 bhp.

Yes. Also whilst at only c.200 BHP, Job's Legacy Turbo is standard, but has 227000 miles on the original engine and turbo. The gearbox has been refreshed once, other than that routine consumables. I believe Job has had Cosworth and Alpina engines fail on him in short order in road cars treated in the same way - he drives them very hard indeed in Europe at sustained high speeds, but does maintain his cars properly with good oil, warms up and cools down etc.

This is very true. It's the cold starting that causes most of the wear in engines, especially if the car has been looked after. If a lot of these are longer journeys then I wouldn't worry. Mines just passed 30K, but I don't drive it every day and usually when I am out for an hour or two of fun (i.e. one tank of fuel!!!)

 

look for a crunchy fifth gear, the retaining nut on phase 2 gearboxes tends to loosen over time and results in a grinding noise.

Apart from that, I wouldn't worry about the engine so long as the car hasn't been abused, the cambelt has been done and the oil changed regularly.

if the car that you've 'gone' for is the one I'm thinking of, you won't find a cleaner better looked after car, it's chris's toy, and get molly coddled!! I drove it once, and it's eerily fast, cos it's quiet I guess, it's crying out for a downpipe though!!! oh, and maybe some bigger front brakes!!
Let me know if you're coming to look at it, I could maybe rustle up a small group to meet....

 

Thanks Ron. I should be getting Chris's car but this thread was posted after I found a V Limited and before Chris and I had struck a deal. However, it turned out to be out of my price range and Chris's car was the better option.

Chris and I will be meeting halfway (I'm in Cumbria) so I won't make it right down south.
