What caught you? Copper with a hand-held gun?

Are a few get-outs worth trying like the old calibration thing etc - www.pepipoo.com

Stivie - you just know its going to sting matey, sorry to be blunt but I think its going to require major grovelling and showing lots of remorse. They might ask you to sit a re-test, or something similar in addition to your ban. Is there a course run by a recognised organisation (say the police) on driving behaviour that you could get on - I say this because you could ask the court to note that you recognise your error and are taking appropriate action off your own back. It won't stop the judge from penalising you, but might soften the blow.

Whatever happens, good luck.

Good luck dude. I know it sucks but best thing you can do is grovel, say you're very sorry and you'll never do it again. If it's your first time they might be a bit lenient, but a ban for sure.

It'll be a ban, but as its up to the magistrate to decide for how long, everything will just be a 'finger in the air' guess. I'd say probably a 14 to 28 days ban, some points (which disappear when you get your licence back) so are irrelevant, and a fine, ballpark figure of around £400 to £500.

Happy Christmas

Stivie, there has been some guff talked about above, so listen to me.

The guidelines given to magistrates would suggest you get a 4 to 8 week ban plus a fine, count on somewhere between 250 and 500 quid.

30-40 mph over the speed limit is a discretionary ban. 40-50mph over is definitely a ban, 4 to 8 weeks is usual provided there aren't any aggrevating circumstances. A good solicitor might be able to keep it to the lower end of the guidelines, but magistrates hear the same mitigating circumstances day-in, day-out (need it for work, can't use public transport, have to take pregnant girlfriend/wife to doctors/hostpital etc etc)

You will NOT get any extra points on your license. When they return it, it will have the same number of points as it has now.

For the record, my experience is 116.5 mph on a 70mph dual carriageway: 6 week ban, 300 quid fine plus no penalty points

The penalties increase in stages for every extra 10 mph over the limit. 9 months for 70mph over the limit is consistent with that. As I said, 4 to 8 weeks ban should be what you should expect, provided there were no aggrevating circumstances.

Not definitely a ban at all, people should know by now that there are only 2 definites in life.

Depends on how good your solicitor is and whether or not there is an attractive magistrate on the bench that you can communicate with eye to eye.

Really depends on many things - where it was and when, weather conditions, time of day, the magistrate etc.

2 examples of a friend of mine (the same guy so he didn't learn)

1 - Average speed of 133mph on a duel carriage way in good visability, clear road: 18 month ban and £800 fine. (He was actually going a lot faster but he saw them and managed to brake to 100mph, but his average was 133!)

2 - Late at night on another duel at 104mph - no ban, 6 points (I believe) and a fine of a few hundred quid (£300/£400???)

Just show remorse and make them believe that you've learnt you lesson and keep your fingers crossed.

Short Ban 3 - 4 wks best guess. Low probability of no ban if you get a lawyer show impact on job and that others will suffer, lots of remose etc

If stopped by the police prepare to be walking for awhile. If by SCP then refuse to name to driver and take the 3pts.

I got a 12 month ban and £350 fine for 122mph in '99, so depending on your current points, I'd say a 6month ban unless you go for mitigating circumstances.

Got done recently on the motorway at 103 MPH, got a months ban and 400 quid fine.

I got a brief but i'm not sure how much he helped. My only advice is to get a letter from your employee saying you will lose your job if you get banned, thats the only thing that will stop a ban. I think you will of course get a bigger fine if they dont ban you.

Thanks for the feedback - if ( when ) they ban me and and i get back my licence, will i have to resit the test or just simply apply for a new one.

also in regards to the points on licence, when i contact my insurance company - elephant in this case - and let let them know, will this affect my premium as hopefully i wont have any extra points and i will still have my full no claims.

Or will the ban mean a stupid premium anyway

We have a JP on the team at 5ive-o. If you post in the law forum on there, I'm sure he'll be able to give you some indication of what to expect as a sentence.

I got done at a virtually identical speed on the A1m on the 2 lane stretch. I got a £100 fine and 6 points. Clear of traffic, daylight etc. And a M3 who was a dot in the mirrors escaped getting pulled over
