Have a WRX STi Ver 6, just coming up to it's first 1000 mile service, booked it into Auto-technica in Mirfield W.Yorks, ( thanks to Tony's earlier reply )I asked them about power increase, they suggested kit comprising of new exhaust system ( I presume catless! ) air-filter and dump valve ! quoting approx £800 - 900 and gives 40bhp more! any thoughts out there? cheers.

Do you have any more information on this company called Auto-technica as i have been looking for a performance car centre in w.yorks for some time now

I would go for the following:

Pipercross Induction
SS Downpipe
Magnex Mid Section
SS Backbox

Then When Funds Allow:

Link ECU and Friends
Leda Suspension
AP 6 Pot brakes

Any induction kit and cat-less exhaust will give reasonable increases.

Exhaust mods & induction kits will seriously increase the cabin noise. Most people like it that way but make sure you're one of them before you part with your dosh !

I'm surprised nobody has commented on the 40bhp "quoted gains".

A dump valve will give you NO gains whatsoever, unless yours is faulty, or you're running much more boost (20psi +). However, they look pretty, and make more noise, if that's what you want.

An exhaust, and filter will give you good gains, and improved throttle response, but 40bhp is VERY optomistic.

This is the same garage that told the other Stef who took part in the REVS shoot-out that his 22B would have 340bhp after having their Stage 1 conversion.
I thought it had been chipped, but it turned out to be exhaust and filter mods only.
Dynoed power was 'only' 311bhp but it was slower than Craig's STi in a straight line!
Mark's right, 40bhp 'sounds' very good, but may be a little ambitious on an STi.
UK cars probably fare better than STi's anyway in terms of power gains from breathing mods, as they are strangled more to begin with.

Hmmmm - had to comment

Auto technica is about 800 m's from my Dads house
40 bhp - in someones wildest dreams! (yes you get increases in low down torque - but very little at the top end)

Personally I would advice great caution. The sti's are known to run very lean with an exhaust and filter set up - leading to engine detonation and engine failure (worst extreme. Speak to Rannoch about his car - is there something on a web site about this? - his was an sti 5 (like mine)

I believe the Exhaust is a full Mongoose at about £500 - reasonable value for money - if you want amazing noise then MRT/BPM are the ones - not too intrusive on the motorway but expensive

Air filter - all much of a muchness - dump valve - not required unless your increasing power - and in any case make sure its internally venting - otherwise can damage engine - if anyone wants to argue search on other threads

To be quite honest I would go for a link first - you'll notice the difference much more for the outlay!

I dont think Autotechnica are engine modders as such - speak to Well Lane Turbo as well - they've given me good service in the past - regardless of what people say - based in Batley. They dont like to mod these cars - they told me to leave alone last time I talked to them - at least they are not just money grabbers like I'm sure some outfits are?

thanks steve, can we be confident in auto-technica to do this initial 1000 mile service? I think your right in as much as 40bhp is over optimistic, I had originally booked it in with Graham Goodes and was jst trying to save myself the 250 mile round trip, although speaking to alan there ( they look after my RS500 450 bhp monster ) he says 99 model scoobs onwards there is very little one can do due to the un-cracked " brain ", even the japs havent been able to get into it.......yet ! thanks for all the advice, much appreciated.

A service on the Scooby is so easy... 1000 mile service consists of oil and oil filter change - dont let them put in Castrol Magnetec - its crap - best stuff is Silkolene Pro S - 5W-40W (and no its not too thin! regardless of what some less well informed people think!)

Do not get ripped off - Paul Frank is a happy customer there with his sti 5 - so they must be ok

I would not bother goign 250 miles round trip! - I get mine done at a local garage in Bristol - takes 20 mins and the garage is embarassed to charge much! (Oh - my other car was an Escort Cosworth )

Perhaps you should mail me off line - when I have time to respond to mails - as I will only end up offending someone! and I dont wnat to do this on a public forum

forget the dump valve: no gains, and just a noise like a number 12 bus pulling away.You`ll appear like an RS turbo type which is even worse.

Also be careful as STis tend to blow up with any tinkering.

Hi Mellow,
dont worry about the servicing, they use 5w40 millers fully synth racing oil, as for engine modders, they arnt really, they are more of a supplier of jap cars, evo's, scoobs etc but they do have alot of experience with servicing.

have you got an insurance quote for the new mods?

A mate of mind was gutted to find his VR6 insurance had rocketted after throttle body and chip mods.

I'd like to mod too but my Scoob insurance went up this year anyway- I don't like the idea of having even less flexibility with choosing insurers...

Down to you matey that I'm going to them tomorrow, your right servicing they seem to be ok at, Millers oil ? sounds ok people here trying to tell me silkolene stuff is the best ....who knows !!!!!!main thing is they're up the road and also stock Millers octane boost...buying lots of that too...think I'll go for a s/steel ex and air filter though poss dwn at Demons or G.Goodes ( quality )thanks for all invaluable advise.

Think that's a little OTT saying STis blow up with any tinkering!
40bhp is rubbish - unless they've read EVOs old long term test STi where he gained 40hp mid range, but only addes 5-10hp total.
Seems more realistic.

22bs sure are slow with 340hp
