plenty of people de-cat there scoob without any adverse affects .....it is a bit of a fiddly job ....as these where put together by the little jap hands LOL......you will more than lightly have a couple of seized bolts into the turbo(14mm head size) & seized heat sheild bolts (10mm head size) .......with average skills it will probably take some one 2-3 hrs ......alot of the time you have to cut the heat sheild or leave it off completly afterwards , depending on manufacturer .

But are there any owners of a UK STI Type UK that have undertaken this work and if so what are the implications of ECU error codes and cat removal?

You will get a CEL on as the O2 sensor detects a problem, various fixes for this but the safest way is to get it ECUTEK'd (remapped) to sort the additional fuel out, control the boost spikes and generally make it a much more pleasureable car to drive.

Appreciate the comments but a ECU TEK will cost me circa £700 which aint avalable @ mo as the TAX man is into me for £9500 ARGH!!!, so my question still stands have any 04 STI owners undertaken this without a remap?

You can do it but its risky, you may be running lean, you may overboost etc. If it runs lean, dets and then blows up it'll cost you more than £700. IMHO, it would be better to save for the exhaust and the cost of the remap at the same time, maybe do some induction mods as well to get your moneys worth from the ECUTEK.

Keep asking, I'm sure there are people who have done it and are still ok and there will be others who have done it and paid the price.

If going from a downpipe with a CAT to a CATless downpipe the same problems will / could arise.
