Stuck in slow moving dual carriage way when white van man decides hes had enough and decides to do a 3 point turn. As he turns right and stops, I carry on with the traffic flow thinking he will wait for a gap in the traffic(which is bumper to bumber) but no he instead reverses into my car, denting my rear door and the arch over the wheel. He pretty much admitted it was his fault and gave me his firms number, his name and reg etc. No one else stopped but I did have my boss in the car as a witness as we were on the way to a meeting. Just hope his firm admit liability and pay up, get some quotes in the morning. Just hope it can be fixed, still feel pi$$ed off though

 

Sorry - it happens but are you sure it is just his fault? Would the insurers argue that you should have waited? Hope I'm wrong...

 

sure does happend to me in my 2 week old wrx. slow moving traffic, i stopped cos the car in front did he didnt cos he was reading hes news paper right in the back of me, not a lot of damage just a few light scratchs but still had him for a bumper respay at a subaru cer'd spray which cost him over £300, hope it stops him driving and reading in the future

Think yourself lucky the damage is small. My Scooby got written off last week because of a white van man turning right into my path without looking, he also admitted blame on the spot. He got charged for dangerous driving the next day by plod, as I hurt someone else by taking avoiding action and ploughed into them I know how u feel im totally gutted, as I know when/if I get the insurance payout it probably wont be enough to get another scoob.

You saw someone starting a three point turn and then drove behind them How much quicker did you get to your destination? Even if you hadn't had an accident was it really worth the risk?

 

No offence, but there was a gap in the traffic, until you drove into it!!

It's his fault: when performing a three point turn it is incumbent upon the individual to check that they are not going to smack another car in the process. If a car doesn't want to give way to an individual making such a maneouver, then that's their privilage. If the road conditions are busy, its more sensible to wait for a quiet side turning and do a 3 point turn there!

Are you insured to use your car for commuting to work or just SDP?

Its easy for us to if and but about what you should or should not have done, but there are occassions when we all don't drive as defensively as we should, the fact remains that if he had performed the 3 pt turn at a more appropriate time, or excercised more care, the accident wouldn't have happened.

I was reversed into in exactly the same place whilst in a car park, nearly four months on the little ****e driving has claimed he wasn't involved so the case has gone to solicitors...if it goes 50/50 I gonna have to sell my scoob cause I only have four years NCB so no protection and even though I'm 32 I'm not willing to line the bloody insurances pockets any more than I already have.

Am also waiting for results before Tek3 cause I don't want to spend and MORE money on the thing until I know I'm keeping it. Frustrating to say the least.

This is where camera phones can be so useful: as soon as you hear the sound of crumpling metal click off several shots from different angles so you can prove the position of the vehicles, skid marks (if any) etc.

 

You can prove diddly-squat with a camera phone. Grainy, low resolution, blurred, distorted and digital.

Buy a cheap disposable film camera for every car you own or drive. No car should be without one.

...however, camera phones can be used to snap the registration plate of the offending vehicle for your own records, and if the driver sees you taking a snap of him too, he's less likely to do a runner.

 

hindsight is a wonderful thing, I have a left over disposable wedding camera in the glovebox now!

 

Trails: Couldn't you make that point to your insurance company: i.e you're not prepared to accept a 50:50 settlement as a matter of principle, owing to the fact that you shouldn't have to accept an increase in premium for something that wasn't your fault?

I would check you are insured for Business class 1 as that'll cover you for travelling to customers offices.

My solicitors (well L&V's solicitors), seem to think we have a good chance of making a full recovery, which is nice cause I've already had to pay out the £300 excess to get the thing repaired...only plus is I should get some compensation for being without my car. Its a pain cause the accident happened mid July and I'm just still waiting to get the thing tek3'd.

 

There was a gap, but not big enough for him to reverse into safely, and considering it was dark, plus raining hard the gap which would have been created by my car would have been better.
Regardless of this as someone else mentioned as he was the one doing the maneouver so should have checked before reversing.

Thankfully I phoned the manager of the company this morning who was very helpful, and happy to pay to get car fixed plus hire car. Also turned out he knew a fair bit about scoobys and we ended up having quite a chat!

Off to get a quote from main dealer next week, Wilsons near romford essex, (main dealers good at crash damage repairs?)unless anyone can recommend somewhere better?

RB5201: Chelmsford Accident Repair Specialists (CARS) are worth a call/visit. Tel 01245 265264. They are on the Rivermead Ind Est. in Chelmsford. I think they do the body repairs for Days of Cford. Also one of the owners has a v nice classic Scooby. Always useful to talk to someone on the same 'flat four' wavelength.

 

Thanks Hammoc, have you had experiance with them or seen their work? Would they be better than a main dealer? Just want my car back to how it was. Not fussed at cost as I'm not paying for it!

 

when mine was damaged XS did all the mechanical stuff (thanks guys!) and Quest motors in Maldon did the bodywork (they are L&V's nominated repairer), and they did a fantastic job...hope that helps.

 

Hi RB5201. Yes had experience of them. Last yr some w**ker who obviously couldn't park had left evidence of their lack of driving ability on my front o/s wing. Nothin' drastic - but I was soooooo p**sed off and like you just wanted things sorted. C.A.R.S. did a great job. The only thing is they always seem to be busy (good sign I guess?) so you have to push yourself up the waiting list.

Not sure how many main dealers have 'in house' bodyshops? I worked on the basis I'd rather deal with the guys who are going to do the work and make them realise I want a PROPER job done.

Hope it all gets sorted ASAP.

 

At least it was negligence on the part of the driver, last week an idiot in an Acrabuild van deliberatly swerved at me. Luckily i was able to take to the safety of the hard shoulder and avoid denting the poor blokes Transit.

This was the Peterborough area and it was a swb, r reg ACRABUILD transit, be warned

 

Been there - oh how I've been there.

Happened to me a few times in different cars. Worst was the 3 week old Impreza - Motorway, me parked in traffic, long distance away comes van 50 + MPH, having a drink, SMASH!!!!!!!! straight into the back of me. New boot, boot flor curved, bumper, spoiler etc etc. A mess.

Admitted liability though - no option really.

Thanks for the advice hammoc, gave them a ring yesterday, taking car down today, guys seemed really friendly and helpful on the phone, happy to sort everything out including the hire car ready for me to pick up. Sad to say Wilsons seemed uninterested in doing the same service for me. Would have to sort car etc out for myself, pick it up etc.
