UK 03 STi PPP on standard unleaded

Default UK 03 STi PPP on standard unleaded

Dealer ran it on std whilst in its tenure - how long before ECU remaps to Optimax?

On 1/4 tank Opti to their 3/4 rubbish, car pulls like mad from just under 3 then goes flat and lifeless right through from 5k+

Is this the sensation you would expect from that coctail and how best to get full adv curve without re-set?

You cant reset the new ecu's, they are not quite the same as the older ones.
It shouldnt take long for it to adapt though, id give it a tank full of the good stuff so it knows what its getting

Cant believe the dealer ran it on normal unleaded, thats bang out of order.

The dealer i bought my car from ran his STi PPP on the normal stuff.

well he's a plonker as well then. Everything points to the fact that the car should be run on 'at least' super-unleaded....
For instance If you put shxite oil in your car and take it back with a blown engine the dealer will try to get out of paying coz of this fact. So why they should they be any different? put the right fuel in and thats that.

I do. He told me to use the bog standard stuff in the WR1 when i picked it up.


I use a different dealer now!

Don't forget, you shouldn't let them go below a 1/4 of a tank as th pressure from the fuel pump is different and that can also affect the way the beast runs

i was also told this by fitter

aparently the ppp fuel pump only runs @ 75% when the tank is under 1/4

Ye Gods! - I will have a word with them direct and see if this is just heresay - what would that give, a range of just over 100 miles??!!

So if you nail it with 1/4 tank then the car does push enough fuel through ..........PMSL.....I also hear if you change direct from 4th to 6th you will burn in hell and never be able to beat things in the wet twisties

Note to self, must add under 1/4 tank 75% fuel into the scoobynet book of bullshxit.




Those comments arent aimed at any of the writers by the way they are just more amusing scooby stories where people are being hood winked into thinking they are driving something amazingly special and different.

Hmmm,

wonder how long it'll be before we get the, "I only had 1/4 tank of fuel left" to go with "I had heatsoak, was on a warm dowwn lap" etc etc

Under the dash taped up is two green connectors and a black one. With the ignition off connect the two green connectors together. Turn ignition on the, the car will enter a kind of self test mode and you will hear various fans come on etc, the ecu light in the car will start flashing out the last fault code it has and it will reset the ecu. Turn ignition off, unplug green connectors and away you go. (At least on the UK ones it does)

The car won't feel any difference in terms of pick pick up points on SUL or UL.

never trust your dealer, at the end of the day they just want your cash, they dont want to help.

In the MY02 WRX handbook under what fuel section. It states:- WRX must be run on 95RON or above. STI must be run on 98RON, but 97RON is sufficient if 98 is not available.
Wonder how many dealers have actually read the owners manuals ??

At 1/4 tank my STI suffers from fuel surge. I have also seen this happen on a 97 classic and a 99 wagon. Only had it happen on the track though, not on the road.

It's considered a big enough problem at Knockhill that a paragraph on it is included in the SIDC track day notes.

Dont start me off Dave ...im having a big enough problem concentrating on work as it is let alone you bringing up other stuff to make me laff even more ........

I hadnt heard of STi fuel surge till matey used it as his excuse when i caught and nipped up the inside of him at the 'ring' .......

I really should find the scoobynet book of bullshxt thread I started ages ago

About 30 miles before any noticable difference

I personally would not "nail it" while there is any standard unleaded remaining in the tank.

Best way to re-set the ecu is get a SECS 1004, but the car will feel "flat" for a few miles while it re-learns.
Bob re-mapped mine and set the default figures to maximum...so I do not get this safe learning period...but it's something to be aware of after a re-set.

But Guys,

Surely Subaru UK still state that it can be ran on standard unleaded fuel(95Ron).
Prodrive recommend running on Super unleaded(97Ron) to get the best performance.

Come up to Knockhill next March and I'll show you fuel surge.

Back straight, into the uphill right hander hairpin which leads onto the straight.

BAM, everytime at 1\4 tank. Seen this personally on 3 scoobs, many more have commented on it.

SIDC Knockhill TrackDay Notes Extract
d) If you feel a power loss coming out of a tight bend - back off and don't keep it planted. You are probably getting the first signs of fuel surge. If you keep it planted you are risking detonation due to a weak mixture. Return to the pits and refuel. This can happen with half a tank of fuel on board, so don't get fooled into thinking it can’t be happening already, it can!
