Default 04WRX with PPP revs rising when changing up

Is anybody else having problems with the revs rising when changing up a gear on their WRX ?

Tootling around town it doesn't happen. Giving it 6K+ revs in each gear it doesn't happen. But when revving to say 3-4K and changing up, the revs rise by about 200-300rpm and makes it sound like I am missing my gearchanges! When coming down to idle it sits at 1000rpm for a few seconds before dropping down to 600rpm tickover.

Somebody else has had a go in the car with the same results, so it isn't my driving.

Any ideas ?

Gaz.

My MY04 WRX Wagon (non PPP) is doing the exact same thing.

I thought I was going mad.

I’ve no idea why it's doing it, but it's bl**dy annoying and embarrassing now I've got a louder exhaust on the car

Nope.

To be honest I thought it was a 'feature' of the car, but now I'm not so sure. 10K service is just around the corner, so I'll bring it up then.

Don't suppose your's has had some dodgy starting around the time this rev issue started?

Hmm, mine/me does this (also an MY04 Wagon PPP) - I thought it was a feature of the driver
It's as if there is a rather stiff throttle damper.

I have also driven an MY03 PPP saloon and this didn't do it, so it can't be me cocking up my gear changes all the time (honest gov).

It seems to have done it for about the last 3K miles, it was PPP'd 5K ago. No starting problems that I can remember.

Glad I am not the only one. Stops me worrying about my driving ! I will have to take it back to the dealer, although my confidence in them is not high. When I had the PPP fitted, the intercooler pipe fell off on the way home and this totally screwed it up. Backfiring, smoking etc.

I may take it to another dealer.

All the 01 onwards cars i have driven do the same thing, they are meant to do it, your dealer will find nothing wrong, i too at first thought something was wrong with my old MY01 bugeye but they are designed to do it.

My Sti PPP does it, I'm thinking its the obvious slack throttle cable that I am yet to tighten. It feels as though its pedal related and was not there until recently. At the manifold end with the throttle on the back stop theres around 4-5 mm I reckon on taking up. Have you checked yours? Perhaps it is just cable stretch?

Not checked for cable stretch, but surely it won't have stretched in 6K miles ?

Yes, it definitely will have stretched in 6k miles, especially from new. Whether this is responsible for your problem will only be known after you check and adjust it. It takes 30 seconds to check and another 30 to adjust.

Well mine had stretched by 6K so I reckon its worth a look? Dealer reckoned it was ok, but with the throttle on the stop there is without doubt slack......will get to it when the daylights around. I'm sure it spoils the feel of the pedal and is causing my problem.

Mine had stretched some 5mm when to came to the 1000 mile service but didn't stop this feature.
The problem feels as if I haven't co-ordinated lifting off the throttle in time with pushing down on the clutch.
Is it a clumsy way to stop clutch judder and associated warranty claims?

Are you guys not listening, they all do it you cannot 'Fix' the problem as you call it.
Slack accelerator cables wont make a difference, its down to the ECU, its very similar to 'heel and toeing' to keep the revs higher during gear changes but not as pronounced.

Your cars are all doing what they should be.

Can't agree with you Zippy - I've already said that a PPP 4 door I drove didn't do it - or perhaps that DID have a fault

And mine never done it. Oh and doesn't since I adjusted the cable last night.......perhaps I've busted it now then?

Surely if you think about it why would a SLACK cable cause the revs to remain high???? if the cable was too tight maybe then it would cause the butterfly to remain open during gear changes, a loose cable would not do this!

Ive a MY03 sti and sometimes I do notice a slight increase in revs, depends at which point I change and how much throtle I have open when I do change...
My Mondeo st220 used to do this all the time, I think its emmisions related to be honest....

Just think that the feel of the throttle was quite poor, so "I" caused the issue. Seems ok at present, so hopefully thats that?

Question ECU vs Tail Pipe

Guys

I just logged in here to look for details on exactly the same problem so it's all good reading for me.

I bought a standard '03 WRX around 3 weeks ago and it was fine. I fitted a straight through tail pipe around a week ago and the car now has these symptoms you describe ie revs climb by around 500 rpm before settling back when you clutch during gear shift.

I am therefore sure that it is something relating to emissions and the ECU fuel settings but am not sure if this can be altered or not?

Any further thought?

I plan on getting mine back to the dealers. I have driven other WRXs and STIs none of which had this problem.

Has anybody had theirs back to the dealer and been told 'they all do that' ?

intresting, my ppp bug does this, however i noticed that when i was running a lightened flywheel it stopped doing it,but as the flywheel was causing some horrendous sounds in the gearbox on over run i went back to a standard flywheel, guess what the over rev problem came back, buggered really either way! annoying i know but i would'nt go back to the lightend flywheel personally
