Has anyone fitted a newage 6 speed box into a classic? (Of course they have) Then can someone advise the cost and any other implications - diffs, driveshafts, mounts, transmission tunnel etc, etc. I'm looking for longer gearing on my type R, I suppose I could fit a taller 5th gear - motorway cruising and the like!

have had a 6speed fitted to my 94 wrx. the kit supplied by api included:- jap spec 6speed, auto prop shaft, a 3.9 rear diff and all the linkages. my local garage fitted the box. it had to be modified to fit the starter and the rear dif mounts needed a bit of tweaking. i think my bill was about £2250 supplied and fitted. very, very pleased with it. hope this is of help to you.

Bit confused myself!
I thought the rear diff 'bolted in' straight swop?
Seen recently that someone had difficulty with the starter motor from the stock car with the 6 speeder, ie classic s/motor and 6 speeder.(similarly the speedo cable/drive)
Also, API would only sell a matching set of jap box/jap rear diff, so the transfer gearing would be cpmpatible (and 1:1)
Are these myths or fact?

Speedo is no problem as you can either fit the cable gizmo in the 6 speed, or the electronic one just works by connecting as normal.
If you use a JDM 6 speed dccd or standard you will need a rear diff of 3.9:1 ratio. The JDM box is shorter geared in 5th and 6th than the UK one and thus you will lose up to 10 mph off your top speed depending upon your ability to rev out in 6th gear. At 8000 rpm [ if you can get there ] you'll be VERY close to 200 mph whichever [JDM or Euro ] box you use. I for one would not wish to be in an lmpreza at that speed.

PS: I have just one 6 speed dccd set left [ gearbox, shift linkage and prop ] until about another 6 or 8 arrive from Japan in later December. We have 3.9 rear diffs in stock sort of permanently; R160 or R180 type.
David, reason some need a starter is that, pre MY98 (iirc) have a different starter motor to MY98 onwards. ie the post MY98 ones are smaller, and consequently just drop in.

David, thanks for the info. Still getting the wife to save like mad
Hope to discuss the topic with you in Jan/feb.
ps: Can you supply the loom/black box (if there is one) for the dccd version as part of the 'kit'?
Regards, Graham.

Think my starter motor was fine with MY95 wrx.
David, at 8000rpm you will be very close to 200mph whichever box you use? That doesnt apply for Jap.
At 3000rpm in 6th im at 70. When im near 7000rpm, i think im about 140mph. So long way off 200mph even if i could go to 8000rpm
