Default TD05FE/VF23

Have a STI 4 RA V-Ltd with a standard VF23 at present. Planning to get car re-mapped early next year. Don't want to go big BHP just reliable 320/330 ish.

Current mods are HKS system, filter and apexi boost controller set at 18psi.

Question is I suppose, should I go the TD05 route to acheive this or is the VF23 good enough for the job ? Would I need new headers as well? I pressume standard 440's will cope ok ?

VF23 and 440s on OEM headers with good intercooling should do what you want.

Thanks for your reply, are you saying the current set up with a re-map to optimise will do the job then ?

With good intercooling yes. Sam Elassar got 323 BHP on SUL with VF23, FMIC, Link ECU on a MY99 UK.

From reading many a thread on here I thought I would need more, I just want to avoid the expense of uprating injectors etc, etc. Although FMIC would not be a cheap route. Would it be possible to stay with TMIC, obviously I have a V4 STi top mount at present.

You can put a smaller VF28 and exhaust on a MY99/00 UK and map to get 310 BHP on rollers that get book figures or lower on the standard car.

I would suggest you consider a new age STi intercooler and scoop.

as john said, the new age intercoolers are bigger

i plan to fit one myself, although i dont want a massive ugly scoop on mine

i have a 97wrx with 440`s, full 3" decat system, K&N pannel filter, Vf23 turbo and i run mine at 1.37bar peak boost and what ever it can push out at the red line with a dawse device and its been ok for ages and ages

i have the standerd Version 3 intercooler at present
from what i can work out with sum flow chart stuff, it "should be" around 325bhp and 300lbft torque

i am not to fussed about the intercooler at present, but i will want one fitted before i change my turbo again (to either a td05 FE or a VF22/34 or similer)

Interesting stuff, by that reckoning mine must be over 300 at present. Full 3" decat apexi induction kit and 18 psi sustained boost. Engine also has uprated interanals after a rebuild 5k ago so should also be quite strong.

Is there any point then in going to a TD05 over a VF23 for 330 bhp target ?

i personaly wouldnt, althouh the td05`s seam to be a lot more robust and can take a lot more abuse

ihi VF 2X`s turbos seam pretty fragile IMO (ive broke a few)

im led to belive the td05 would spool a little bit later then the vf23, which wouldnt really be any help in your case if you only want 320/330 ish bhp

i would stick with what you have until it breaks, or you would like a bit more power

it saves you money
