Default how can you tell if your engine has been rebuilt?

can you tell by just looking?

I would have thought a pile of reciepts or a bill from an engine builder would be a good place to start.

Any0ne can jet wash an engine to make it look like nearly new so not really in indictator IMHO

I'm afraid you cannot tell easily. Look at all the visible gaskets edges, chances are that most of them will have been replaced if the engine has had a full rebuild, you may also see a little gasket sealent around the edges.
