If I were to upgrade the turbo on my RB5, which type Turbo should I fit with minimal modifications and are there any gains to be had without modifying the engine further?

What are the existing injector sizes and would these need changing for a larger size too if I were to go ahead?

Standard UK Engine. Equal length header, Hayward and Scott de-cat exhaust with Power Engineering mid-section sports cat fitted. Green Air Filter. Tek 2 remap.

Car is used for sprinting and hillclibing so drivability is of the essence. Would be getting the car re-mapped after installation for sure.

Any advice/suggestions would be very gratefully recieved.

the standard injectors are I believe 440's
these can be mapped to run with a td05 but many will tell you to run 550's just to be sure.

 

440s should be good for 340bhp

TD05 is a very good turbo....and I have one for sale also

I am also thinking of going this way with MY99, but need to retain road flexibility.
I see there is an IHI VF28 rollerbearing turbo as used in the STi ver5,6 and Uk P1 for sale on Ebay. What is this, is it a TD05 or something else?

 

VF28 is a different turbo. Not as good or robust as TD05.....PM me if you're interested.

VF28 is good for 300/310BHP with uprated fuel pump and regulator on 440's
Spool up is better then the TD05 but the TD05 has more potential if you wish to take things further.

Does a prefix unknown 34 Turbo from an STI mean anything to someone?

 

vf34 - Not the same top end power as a td05, but much nicer torque curve. However, assuming you never go below 4k when competing, go with a td05.

440's can be run at higher pressure to provide up to 350-360 hp, but charge cooling quickly becomes an issue for hard track work. Assuming your events are less than 2 minutes you should be OK, but 20 minutes on track requires different mapping of timing...or water injection.

Are you prepared for the broken gearboxes this will cause? Budget for a 6 speed first, IMHO.

Are your lap times less than 2 minutes ?

Have a look at the project section for the thread from another Graham aka 911. He's hillclimbing his STi3 and has put together a useful spec list you might want to follow. Essentially its a TD05FE with 20g compressor wheel, headers which you have, 550cc injectors, STi 8 TMIC and all mapped.

See you next year hopefully, when I should be able to give those a TVRs a fright

Thanks for the info Richard. Definitely don't wish to budget for broken gearboxes! The torque is really of more interest to me going up windy hills and the like.

Found 911 O.K.

Was out "Boating" at Lydden Hill last weekend.
Only managed 98.5 secs. (Just under 2 minutes!)
I spun in practice. Spun on 1st. timed run and just wanted to register a time in final 2nd. timed run.
Against my previous best of 88.08 secs in the dry, it was pretty sad. Although overall Pos. 9th. out of 46 eased the pain a bit.

Well done for 9th. Took one look at the long range weather forecast and decided to call an end to this season.
I remember at a previous meeting in afternoon, after the sprint sessions, seeing the rivers at Lyyden and the marshalls using buckets to dry the track.
