Post 1999 Forester S Turbo - problem at 2700-3500 rpm

Hello I'm new here, but have had a look around and it seems likely that my problem may be MAF sensor and/or Lambda Sensor -- any advice gratefully received ....
I have just bought the 99 Forester Turbo with 84 k with a good(ish) service history ( mostly Subaru dealer or specialist). Seems to be suffering from a lack of power/hestitation/misfiring/flat spot (don't know quite how best to describe it) between approx 2500 and 3500 rpm. Also I have had a few instances of the rpm fluctuating at tickover 500-1000 rpm and back etc (but not every time I stop). Following advice here I checked the error codes by connecting the black lead - got code 23, MAF sensor? Reset the ECU (green lead operated the throttle etc, then drove till Engine light flashed steadily) -- have driven may approx 100 miles since and then checked error codes again - none reported, but still lumpy power 2500-3500 rpm (on flat and hills) and occasional varying idle speed.. Removed the MAF and cleaned it with non-residue electical contact cleaner, as advised elsewhere on forum. The Lambda sensor appears to have been replaced at some stage ( looks like a universal 3-wire as is "spliced" into the lead). Disconnected the MAF and car still started and idled, but with CEL on - does this imply MAF is not working. I am assuming a change of MAF and Lambda may be required -- anyone got any opinions if this is the right thing to do - or am I missing other possible causes for my symptoms (apart from the verbal diarrhea that is).. Am I running any expensive (!) risks in continuing to use the car with these faults ?
Also the previous owner couldn't tell me the immobiliser PIN - can I reset that using the programming PIN advised elsewhere on the forum to a new value ?

sorry so many questions .....

Changed the MAF - like a new car now. If I can get the chewed up sump plug off I might change the oil !

Was reading your description and thinking "MAF" then saw your reply, glad it is sorted.

Two options with the sump plug spring to mind.. firstly buy a replacement and then use a set of mole grips or a smaller socket tapped onto the bolt with a hammer (don't hit it too hard though else you might damage the sump or thread in the sump etc..)
