Default Dealer didn't help..Can you? Its a tester.. the ends good to

Took car to B&C in surrey for a front end noise which gets worse at speed..
At the same time had the 60 000 mile service done(cam belt). Car is a MY00 turbo and has been mine from new and has only just clocked up 20 000 miles.

The noise in question sounds like a blower or gear wine and gets noticable from 55mph upwards.

Turn the engine off while at speed and the noise remains. So engine ok.

Wheel bearings just been checked and serviced and noise still there. So Bearings ok.

Engine off and gearbox in neutral and noise still there. Input shaft of gearbox ok.

So its got to be the rest of gearbox, front diff or front drive shafts???

And one more thing... noise is noticable at low speeds, independent of what gear I'm in. Have to listen carefully!!! However when in gear, second for instance at crawling speed, when putting pressure on the gear **** lightly back into the gate, then the noise at least doubles... Any ideas??

Any answers or suggestions would be most appreciated.

Jason

P.S Thanks to the gent that gave me a few numbers and the answer from the dealer.... yes there is a noise...wait until its worse and we may be able to find it... They didn't even try.

As an engineer by trade its my experience that the longer you run something that damaged the more risk to other components you do. Its my companies policy to run to failure dependant on product... I don't intent to run my car to bloody failure

Sounds similar to what I had. Ended up being a bearing in the box had lost all it's case hardening and hence worn. Car had only done 21,000 at the time.
It was a small tappered bearing, not 100% sure where from, but I think it may be the centre diff.
It was certainly somewhere near the back of the box, because the gearbox specialist found the problem as soon as he started to strip it.

You could hear mine above 45mph regardless of gear or clutch position and it did sound like it was coming from behind the speedo initially. Also got louder if you wiggled the gearstick around in the gate.

As Scott T says sounds like a bearing in the diff.

Seems some MY00's have a weakness here, mine started to be noticeable about 42K miles (but just short of 60K service in years - if you understand me ).

Sounds like transmission whine and increases pitch with speed (not revs) .. mine was most noticeable when coasting in 3rd from 30 mph down to junctions although garage said mine was quiet and it's usually more of a howl.

Cost to fix £592 .. it's not the parts it's the labour. That was at a main dealer but a few specialists said that they would not be much cheaper

A guy local to me, Vince at RDS. He does alot of Subaru work and always seems to have one when I pop round for work or a chat.

Labour rate of £27.50

My box was 5 hours labour to get the box in and out and a couple of hundred quid for the gearbox strip and rebuild (done by another local gearbox specialist).
I also had an ADL Blueprint clutch fitted which was £240. All in I think it was about £680, but that included the clutch.
