I am thinking of buying a subaru impreza wr1, having owned an impreza in the dim and distant past. My worry is that there seems to be a large number of these who are on there 2nd/3rd owner by 5000 miles. Is there a specific problem with the wr1 that is causing people to get rid of them after owning them a short while.

Bill, I am more than happy with mine, its everything I wanted and more, there will be a lot of people for whatever reason will say that they are not worth it, but you have to see through the bullsh!t and have a test drive, it will make your mind up. go for a test drive in one-there are plenty at subaru garages but make sure you try the improved 05 sti ppp and see which one you prefer,you should get a great deal on a wr1 as it is last year's model and the dealers do not want an 04 model next to their "improved " 05 model

Drive one then decide - little point in getting everyones else's opinion on it, after all opinions are like, erm, well, you get the idea. You'll get as many people saying they love them as those that says its an overpriced special.

if you want a rocket ship - no buy a euro import STI and get it sorted 8 / 9 k will buy allot of performace mods but no warrenty

I have one and yes I would buy one again if I had the choice, you will have a limited edition and the fastest UK Subaru with 3 years full Subaru warranty and at the end of the day it'll be worth more than a standard STi with PPP when you finally come to sell it like the P1, 22B etc...

There are my reasons on there.

It's without doubt an awesome car. I always say that you either have luxury (Rolls Royce) or performance (Single seat trackday machine) and everything else, including our scoobs is a compromise.

I like electric windows thanks and A/C. I like 5 seats (3 kids) and of course I like performance.

The WR1 ticked every box for me and when the WR2 (or whatever Subaru call it) arrives, monies permitting at the time, i'll be first in the Q.

Best 30K I ever spent.

Get a JDM Model.

1. You get electric folding mirrors.

2. Rear Wiper.

3. Latest engine block with them hyper duper pistons (sorry forget what they call it).

4. Twin Scroll Turbo.

5. Red instruments on black background which do a sweep on start up which look cool as ****!

Can't think of other things JDM has over WR1.

Oh, small matter of saving about £4k on JDM vs WR1. So who needs a warranty? It only lasts 3 years anyway. If the JDM blows up you can use the £4k to put towards a 2.5 conversion at Powerstation and have a type25.

Has my MY03 WRX STi JDM 16 months now and in terms of warranty claims....errr none touch wood. Not even had to replace any bulbs yet (he says looking back at his MY00 classic with the sidelights).

p.s. Until IM start providing a good spec as JDM cars then I will always be buying JDM scoobs.

 

Great write up. Enjoyed reading that, in a similar predicament myself at the moment. Keep toying with the idea of selling my 00MY (Tek 2, de-cat and Prodrive handling pack) and replacing with an 12-18 month old STI, just dont want to be dissapaointed

Definitely the best of the 4 that I've had (98, P1, STi8, WR1) and I'd definitely buy one again. Think I'd agree with the earlier statement that several on 2nd owner would be ex demos.

As for Dave A's 'overpriced special' comment, given that it's the first special to be cheaper that the sum of the mods on it, IMHO it's a statement reserved solely for the ill-informed

Don't you think that the WR1 is becoming like the PPP'd UK300?, ie- **** hot when first released and then a few months down the road another model gets released of equal performance and everyone jumps ship.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not slating the car, far from it.

But..

If I were a current WR1 owner and paid full RRP I'd be pretty peed off to hear that the 2005 STi with PPP & DCCD is an almost identicle car (mechanically) to the WR1 and is a few grand cheaper and most importantly available in WR Blue with gold wheels

It just reminded me of when the first official 2002 STi's hit the UK, that must have p1ssed off the UK300 owners who paid top dollar for what is essentially a PPP'd bugeye with quad lamps.

All IMHO of course.

 

Can i say that i think the point is being missed here the wr1 is unique to 500 people and the performance,colour etc is their choice,of course "new" models will come into existence be it MY05/6/7, import/export and so on but but the wr1 remains a one off at the time it came into existence.
I am sure people who bought a wr1 A) realised a new STI was around the corner and B)Could afford one if they wanted but they chose not too for perhaps 500 different reasons! but i am sure ignorance was not one of them.

I got a very good PX on my old WRX so i'm more than happy with the deal that i got. I certainly knew that the MY05 was round the corner. Something to do with us fast approching the end of 2004 gave it away as i remember

From a personal point of view i (flame suit on) wouldn't want a blue car with gold wheels. I'd end up changing them for the PFF7's anyway, then would add the PPP, which would then whack my insurance up through the roof. So to me it's a bit of a no brainer really.

I'm not worried aboutthe diff not being exclusive anymore and from memory it was fairly common knowledge the UK cars were getting it for the last couple of years.

This whole discussion on the WR1/MY05 will run and run. For about another 11 months when the MY06 details are released. Then it'll start all over again!
